How much do you want a child to develop an Oedipus Complex? But that's not the point I was making, the point is you can't actually determine how someone will take it, unless you have ESP?

I'd develop an Oedipus complex from seeing my mother naked? I also don't see my father in a towel often, but it happens on occasion. It's not a horrifying experience, and only those who immediately connect nakedness with sex would have that problem. I actually connect nudity with comfort, because It's extremely hot in Florida, so even with the A/C on it's actually more comfortable with fewer clothes. Many people wear very little outside because of the heat, so I see much more of others than average. People walk around campus in string Bikinis, there are a few pools on campus however, so it doesn't really bother me. The main problem is you assume naked=sex. Which is entirely untrue, unless you bathe and use the toilet with all of your clothes on...

My point both he and you missed it. I was building up to that with individual experiences, and yeah they would take it better if you control your him environment and accept nudity as a part of life not just dealing with sex.

Right. Plus the fact that Ches doesn't seem to understand that the whole Freud thing doesn't apply to everyone and nudity doesn't equal Sex. I wouldn't have sex with my mother for any reason and though uncommon in my era I was breastfed till I was two I believe. Though I have no real memories of it.

The real point here is:

IT IS ALL BASED ON CULTURAL AND PERSONAL EXPERIENCES!

Any and all various responses steam from those two major factors. Where the kid is culturally and how it is dealt with personally. All this Freud BS and what western quacks think about the "harmful" effects of nudity really don't matter if it doesn't apply to the culture or personal experiences one has.

As remember Western doctors usually only study other westerners.

I believe this changes from culture to culture and situation to situation. Bathing together is usually acceptable, much like taking children into the "wrong" bathroom, but I don't think constant nudity is considered to be necessary or beneficial to the child and it also may be considered indecent exposure.

THIS. Yeah in America we are now a little bit more prudish about the subject now. However turn the clock back a few decades ago and it wasn't uncommon for people to be naked around their kids.

Turn back the clock and you also find dozens of cultures with a nakey family, like the Japanese, Scandinavians, Eskimoe and most Aborignial cultures.

Yes however too many people on this thread are assuming that America has always had this nudity basis when it just wasn't the case. Try reading some of Mark Twain's books and other 19th or hell 18th century books you will find that small farming families usually bathe and went around naked during the summer.

As seen in this thread some of those traditions are still being upheld.

I walk around naked in front of my children, but then I also breastfed them until they were five years old. I think that one should be considerate of the feelings of others. My son told me that it bothered him, so now I cover myself with a kimono whne he is around or give a heads up that I am coming out naked to grab something so he can avert his gaze.

Yes because you lack the cultural understanding behind it. I forget which President it was either Carter or FDR but they were breastfeed till they were 8 year old. Earlier in our history it wasn't uncommon for mom's to breastfeed children as old as ten years of age especially if they were dirt poor.

If you ever read the Grapes of Wrath, at the end of the story, one of the characters breastfeeds a starving man.

Do you have ESP then? Seems like you can't determine it either therefore you are unable to fully know if this is more harmful or helpful in a child's development.

I meant to post "suckling" a child above. Just saying for clarification. The child sucking a breast relieves stress or the mother suckling the child relieves him of stress because of the cuddling and powerful natural sedatives in breastmilk.

PROTIP: I never had problems with a fussing baby during movies. I always poked in the titty and after the show people would come up to me to say that when they saw my baby they were outraged until they saw my success in keeping them quiet all during the film. I have also breastfed by child during the Seattle Ballet.
