- So... I went out with a few friends yesterday, and my friend's sister blasted one of the popular music radio frequencies... and through the speaker poured some... well, damn near ******** lyrics (at least stuff that I don't know if I'd want my kid in middle school listening to). She knew all the words, by heart, and she's 14 years old (almost 15).
One of the more memorable songs was "TiK ToK" by Ke$ha. Here's some of the lyrics, and the song:

Wake up in the morning feeling like P Diddy
(Hey, what up girl?)
Put my glasses on, I'm out the door
I'm gonna hit this city (Lets go)
Before I leave, brush my teeth with a bottle of Jack
Cause when I leave for the night, I ain't coming back
I'm talking - pedicure on our toes, toes
Trying on all our clothes, clothes
Boys blowing up our phones, phones
Drop-topping, playing our favorite cds
Pulling up to the parties
Trying to get a little bit tipsy
[chorus]
Don't stop, make it pop
DJ, blow my speakers up
Tonight, Imma fight
Till we see the sunlight
Tick tock, on the clock
But the party don't stop
Woah-oh oh oh
Woah-oh oh oh (x2)
Ain't got a care in world, but got plenty of beer
Ain't got no money in my pocket, but I'm already here
And now the dudes are lining up cause they hear we got swagger
But we kick em to the curb unless they look like Mick Jagger
I'm talking about - everybody getting crunk, crunk
Boys trying to touch my junk, junk
Gonna smack him if he getting too drunk, drunk
Now, now - we goin till they kick us out, out
Or the police shut us down, down
Police shut us down, down
Po-po shut us -
[chorus]
DJ, you build me up
You break me down
My heart, it pounds
Yeah, you got me
With my hands up
You got me now
You got that sound
Yea, you got me
DJ, you build me up
You break me down
My heart, it pounds
Yeah, you got me
With my hands up
Put your hands up
Put your hands up
No, the party don't start until I walk in
[chorus]
I underlined some of the stuff that stood out.
Now, I admit, it's a catchy song. And the kids probably aren't really thinking about what they're hearing. And I don't think musician Ke$ha is trying to brainwash kids into being alcoholics. But I do think that this stuff being fed into our kid's minds is a little... concerning.
I heard two other songs she played, sung by men (hip hop genre) talk mention virginity and "breaking" it.
No, I don't want the radio censored. I don't really know what "should" or could be done. I'm not asking for change here... just a discussion.
Do you think music really effects our behavior?
Kids are even more impressionable... are they are risk?
Should we "take away" the music, or educate them about it's context (such as, this song is about girls who are obviously over the legal drinking age)?
Most of ED is apathetic about this sort of subject, in my experience. If you don't give a damn, you shouldn't bother coming here just to tell us that. It's bumping what you consider to be a pointless thread.

So...before someone comes in here and says I'm pro-censorship... I'm not. I'm anti-censorship, and I think censhorship should be entirely abolished. That's not my idea of a "solution" to this "problem". I'm only asking questions.
For instance, I'll insert that I like this song, despite the fact that I don't think kids should be listening to it.
