This ain't a photoshop, saw the same billboard with me own peepers in bonny Glasgow. Virgin Media UK are using the 'success kid' meme to advertise their TV package. It's the first example I have seen of a large, multinational company using an internet meme in a major advertising campaign and it got me thinking... how far will it go?

There's been a few of these instances, and usually the companies are pretty thorough on tracking down where the photo originates and getting it legal by paying for the usage of it.

Like any joke, that joke has a limited life span.

Ahahahahah you're funny!

Oh wait a minute, you actually believe that. gonk

The joke in its original form isn't going to be as funny as when everyone heard it the first time.

That's why memes have to constantly evolve to stay relevant and entertaining.

There are some classics, but the overwhelming majority of memes depend on being constantly reinvented and modified.

How would you go about weaning a classic out of circulation?

I don't think one person has the ability to do that so I have no idea other than to brutally murder some children and as the police find me naked in the forest feasting on their fleshy red remains I'd scream, "BUT. THEN. WHO. WAS. PHOOOOOOOOOONE!?" as my eyes roll into the back of my head and I hold a toddler's head to my ear.

Then again that might make /b/ use it more than ever...

Anyways, I think the memes that are the most popular are ones that are user-friendly, like the endless forms of the Advice Dog meme.

It's the same format and theme every time, you just fill in the blanks.

How does Adele like her eggs in the morning? In a cake.

Never, ever gets old. Ever.

Must. Use.

Thank you, seriously.
Saw an ad for an orthopedic surgeon using the "arrow in the knee" meme.

If meme ads turn out to be popular and they make the company money, it'll continue to happen. I'm not gonna lie, an ad with Insanity Wolf or some My Little Pony meme would get my attention...
Oh God, I'm so torn.
I dearly hope this gets big, because it would just be so awesome.
On the other hand, I will end up buying so much s**t I don't really need because I cannot refuse the meme-tisements.

I think memes are what they are: silly little jokes to make us laugh.

Look up what meme means.

Ah, semantics.

When you don't have anything else to argue about, might as well argue over terminology.

Let's just pretend I said "internet memes" instead of just "memes", even though it should be obvious what I was referring to given the topic of the thread.

They still function as memes.
