❤ Male dominated culture and Islamic beliefs
User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.Looking at the same issue from two different perspectives, "Male Dominated Culture". A Muslim woman will really think that the lady wearing the bathing suit is from a male-dominated culture, where as a woman from the left will think the Muslim lady is from a male-dominated culture, and she is oppressed.

Looking at this picture, do you really believe that Islamic culture is as male dominated as Western culture? Perhaps people might think Muslim women are oppressed, but many women feel liberated from the glaring eyes of males, or from being sexualized.

Going to high school, I was often labeled as the "Bible book seller" because of the manner in which I dressed, and teased because of my long skirts and long sleeved shirts, which I felt were more comfortable and made me feel good. However, I was excluded from groups and teased because I wasn't 'sexualizing' myself. Other girls, who also felt the way I felt, were also teased and tormented throughout school because they didn't want to fit into the 'crowd', a lot of teenagers are therefore driven towards committing suicide, becoming anorexic or put on weight and loose themselves in an eating disorder because society expects them to look a certain way, and to act a certain way.

People criticize Islamic values because our ladies cover themselves, and try to behave in modest ways, but fail to look at their own society crippling because these values are not instilled into the youth. What do you guys think?

its more male dominated, this is pretty obvious.

Yes, the Islamic culture is male-dominated, more so than the western world. In the western world, people strive for equal rights among sexes and there has been progress. What I fear most in this world is regression.

Go ahead and be modest. Dressing up in a blanket is a silly way of doing it, however. And America is rather prudish, but doesn't mind violence for some unusual reason. I blame the Puritans.

The part of the world where a woman had acid thrown in her face, then they in court settled it as an eye for an eye and threw acid in the husband's face.
I dont recall the supreme court ordering people an eye for an eye did they?

repression is about freedom, theres more female freedom in modern societies.

The whole 'rights' thing, is a little mind boggling to me, what about responsibilities and obligations? When women supposedly gained "rights" in the Western world, they forgot about their responsibilities and obligations to society. What kind of rights are you talking about b.t.w? Because I'm a little confused as to how the rights are perceived to be 'different'

The Islamic culture isn't as male dominated as the western world, because in the Islamic society, we're not sexualized. I don't need to sleep with someone or date them in order for them to consider me a potential wife, a potential spouse. As a mother, who will have a son that is Muslim, I will always be respected and cherished despite the age of my child. Whereas Western mothers are often cursed, and bad talked by their daughters and sons. sweatdrop

Acid cases are so rare. sweatdrop This can also happen in ANY part of the world. The people who do this are not practicing true Islam, because no where in the Quran does it state that a woman is to have acid thrown in her face because of how she is dressed. sweatdrop

Right to "bodily integrity and autonomy; to vote (suffrage); to hold public office; to work; to fair wages or equal pay; to own property; to education; to serve in the military or be conscripted; to enter into legal contracts; and to have marital, parental and religious rights." Thank you, Wikipedia.

That's, uh, that's an accomplishment. No, in your words, women are like gems hidden away. So women are objects. Nice, I guess. I recall a Muslim here on Gaia also saying that women dress up this way because it helps males avoid lustful thoughts. Lazy ******** these men are.

Neither do I, but, you know, it seems marriage is decreasing, which I'm all for. Marriage is nothing more than a business partnership.

It was for a reason I dont recall, not related to her dress. Howabout http://people.howstuffworks.com/veil3.htm wow so easy to google. 'In many Muslim countries, women lack equality and basic rights that other women take for granted' now just google sexist muslim countries lol

Bashful Genius

I think both of you guys have a misconstructed idea about Islam.

Women in Islam have jobs, have property, can hold public office, can have equal pay and so on. The reason why women might not be seen holding these positions is because our culture isn't enveloped around this. It depends on your priorities and values. Women who are married, and who are establishing a family (such as having children and so on) put on a higher place taking care of their children and being there for them. My mother who is NOT muslim, because I wasn't born in a Muslim family agrees with these values, as she even though she has a PhD and everything placed her career aside to take care of her children, to be there for them emotionally. She prefers this, because her value is family oriented, rather than professionally oriented. She is entirely thankful that out of ALL of the cousins in the entire family, I am still the only girl who is devoted to her family, who will be there for her in her older age, because I was raised with these values and these were placed in concrete when I reverted to Islam. My mother is now 100% aware that I will never abandon her, nor disrespect her.

This is the same concept for many women who come from these religious and cultural backgrounds. Our values and our priorities are aimed at FAMILY. It is higher in our list than career and professional advancement. This isn't to say that we don't have careers or don't have education. Although I am Muslim, I have finished a bachelor, a masters and now I am working on International Relations. I have lived, and traveled to over three different continents.

So, to us we don't care to hold public office, we don't care to work if we don't need to (many work b.t.w, a lot of Saud women have positions as doctors, and lawyers), we couldn't really care for fair wages or equal pay (Yes, wages and pay are EQUAL to both women and men in Sharia countries), women can own property, women can become educated, women can enter into legal contracts, have marital, religious and parental rights. It's just that they're slightly different, and the priorities are varied. These all happen in countries where good Sharia law is practiced, and yes countries where people are NOT educated make the rest of the Islamic world look bad (Afghanistan and so on).

Haven't you seen the women serving the Military? >_<

There are bad representation of Islam in countries, unfortunately.

What sex is the person and or people who stigmatized these values deemed modest and where do these values derive from?

(Hint: everything can be radical)
Comparing western society to Islamic culture/tradition/society is ridiculously ignorant, and all to rationalize the deeply imbedded bigotry and misogyny of Islamic culture.

But why?
Because western women have a constantly lowering inclination to condemn what is boring and useless, as every person should.
Radical modesty is being submissive, and being submissive does nothing for your sex/rights.
BTW: I'm implying your God is your problem, western culture is more secular and therefor more probable to have more opportunities pertaining to rights.

Why does a more secular society have this advantage? Because it's less plausible for people in western culture to be religious, allows for traditionalist fundamentalism to been show for what it really is in modern day society.
