I agree completely. I have a paragraph in my profile dedicated to the arrogance of so many fundie atheists. It's why I so avidly shoot down the "atheists are smarter than everyone else!" argument.

Some of them think they're tough s**t and know all because they don't believe in God. I quit responding to the Creationist vs. Evolution threads (and the like) because, as implied in my profile, I got tired of having to explain (to the supposedly pro-science crowd) that evolution has nothing to do with the beginning of the universe, and that speciation is an evolutionary process and not evolution in itself.

The problem is that they think that faith is the only thing that makes a person insane and illinformed, and if they lack faith, they're automatically geniuses. And, as you've observed, you simply cannot be an atheist and correct them at the same time. I have been called an undercover creationist/christian before.

I tell them they're off the team. Don't worry, we still have the professors, every side has some bad eggs.

So, I guess they think Sir Isaac Newton was a ********, then? He developed many laws of physics, and once stated "If I have seen further it is only by standing on the shoulders of giants."

He was also an alchemist. Guess what many philosophers were.

I'm sorry, but I think philosophy can be quite necessary for human self-awareness. I personally follow Socrates' example by refusing to claim absolute knowledge of anything. Unlike theists or atheists, who believe that what they believe is the absolute and final Truth.

Agnosticism FTW.

I have to agree here. Philosophical concepts can't necessarily be proven, but too many people fallaciously equate that to it being useless bullshit. Sure you can't support something in a scientific debate with philosophy, but it still has its place in the world.

In the name of nit-pickyness, (a)theism isn't about ultimate truth. It is purely about belief and doesn't have to be based on anything objective. Ironically, (a)gnosticism is about ultimate truth since it is about the actual proof/evidence (or lack thereof) for the object itself (i.e. God), and not the belief. Many people just used agnosticism as a way to cop out of saying they're an atheist. If one doesn't believe in God, they're an atheist. Period. There can be an agnostic-atheist like myself: I don't believe in God (and probably never will), but I don't deny the possibility.

Exactly. Darwinian Theory has nothing to do with the religious question what-so-ever (with the exception of Creationist argument of course). One need not believe in Darwin's Theory to be an atheist nor need one refute it to be considered religious. I fact, the majority of Roman Catholics accept Darwin's Theory as the most likely answer to the origin of the species.

I fear that Darwin is becoming to younger "atheists" what Marilyn Manson is to younger "satanists" regardless of his own opinions on the matter. A binding figure that gives a standard to rebellious angst (or just plain raw stupidity). An insult to Darwin if anything in my opinion.

Edit: No offence to Manson. The guy makes some good music. Or did anyway... rolleyes

You are quite correct. The Catholic Church has accepted Evolution as an explanation and an example of God's power. It makes me sad when people deny evolution and then say they believe in God, because that shows they don't think God could do something as wondrous as the changing of life.

And, although I already posted it, the atheists who think the Big Bang disproves god, don't understand where it came from. Same for the Christians who don't even bother to study where the idea either. sad

Atheist isn't a religion. It is almost stupid to have a name for it. It is just a statement that someone doesn't believe in something. I don't believe in taking illegal drugs, but there is not a name for that. I don't play golf, but there is not a specific name for that either.

I am an atheist, but it doesn't mean I have other thoughts similar to other atheists. Lumping people together because they don't believe something is not entirely realistic. Rude people exist everywhere, it doesn't make them more or less atheist.

Every group--whether it be Christians, athiests, white people, gays, straights or Toronto Maple Leafs fans--has its share of ignorant prickholes. Just because some are atheist doesn't make them any more special than the other seven million jerkoffs around the globe. The solution? Ignore them. It pisses them off even more. It's hilarious.

Very well put together, I compeletly agree.

Fix'd. Not necessarily, but it can be, even to those that deny that it is. There are certain people that talk about Dawkins as though they are talking about the pope.

Part of what makes a religion is a set of beliefs. Atheism is just one or lack of one.

Then that would be Dawkinsism [He would be pleased rolleyes ]. And just because some atheists like Dawkins that much, doesn't mean that all do.

That reminds me of my mom. She doesn't "believe in" evolution or the big bang or abiogenesis, and she doesn't know what they are. They must understand that they don't have to give up god to appreciate science. That's the best way to achieve the delusion of intelligence, huh? By never giving youself the opportunity to be wrong.

Case in point, my last post (Dawkins bugs me. Seriously.).

Indeed. What worries me however is how it slowly seems to be becoming a religion by adopting norms and ideals which if you don't accept make you no longer an atheist. Absolute nonsense in short.
