If you're young, then follow these steps:

1. Learn and practice techniques to study effectively
2. Learn and practice techniques to produce high-quality work

After a couple years of repeating step 2 you will qualify for university. At this point you move from general knowledge to specialism.

3. Repeat 1 & 2

You should now have a degree. This brings you pretty much to the outer limits of the sum of human knowledge in your field, which is super neat.

4. Repeat 1 & 2

Congratulations! You are a leading expert. That's pretty damn intelligent.

It is not hard to excel at schoolwork if you put your mind to it. Excelling at academia will snowball into a fantastic career of learning, both information and applicable skills. Edison said, "Genius is one percent inspiration, ninety nine percent perspiration". This is absolutely true. If you devote yourself to your work young, you will reap the rewards for years to come.

Summary
If you're still young enough to be able to, do your schoolwork and do it well. It's there for a reason.

Cos accepting everything you're fed without a thought proves you're a mindless drone, not someone who thinks for his/her self.

While getting to the truth behind everything is a sign of an open mind it can gain you a bruise from time to time - if this were the good ol' times you'd be accused and trialed for heressy for such behavior but today isn't really that different. Try posting somewhere that you don't give a *@#! about what any of the Kardashians said or how big Kim's a** is...

But does that mean you aren't intelligent?

Plenty of truly mindless drones, such as computers, or calculators, take input from humans all the time and can't make their own decisions, but are very smart.

As do humans, quite frankly. Peoples' actions are heavily affected by the brain chemistry so to say you actually conciously do what you've decided upon isn't entirely accurate (check out NatGeo's Brain Games if you think human brain to be so superior). Not to mention no matter how intelligent you are you're still subject to charismatic leaders turning you into what you'd never think of becoming.

Sure, questioning as such doesn't make you intelligent but it's a sign you actually think about stuff and are not, in fact, a computer following given instructions.

Computers aren't really smart - they just make plenty of arythmetic operations very quickly (a computer can beat a chess champ cos it calculates possible options faster). It's the media that call 'em that for more effect. If they're so smart how come it's extremely difficult to make a robot that will recognise the environment it's in - biological forms don't give this no work at all.

It's a matter of what they are good at; computers are not meant to recognize their environment, they're meant to do calculations quickly. But while organic structures will never be able to compute as fast as a computer, electronics do have some ability to recognize environmental stresses, and in the future will likely be as good as organic creatures at it. xp

Also, a lot of the problem with robots is price, as you would need dozens of micro sensors which detect pressure and whatnot all over the robits body. Although ,there are cameras which can recognize facial features and what have you. xp

I guess (though you can easily fool facial recognition software with shades and a baseball cap). Chatbots are another example. Though I'd debate if processing power alone is what determines intelligence. As much as it'd be debatable if a galactic champion in solving crossword puzzles that can't do basic math is such a genius - a genius at crosswords maybe, but in general? Then again if you look at the human brain as a computer (as I have before) it might as well be a matter of architecture and processing power (costs are one thing but how do you fit a zillion processors on a robot the size of a vacuum cleaner?). If we don't kill ourselves off (as a species) prematurely we might get to see actually intelligent machines.

We've sure gone off topic, haven't we? xp

You all missed the joke. Pfft.
Practice makes perfect.
So what do smart people do that being perfect at would be preferable? Learning rate perhaps.

So practice learning.

Also proven to increase iq http://brainscale.net/dual-n-back/training not sure how much tho
Getting people's respect you prolly want something to show for yourself like a proof of accomplishment, in which case work on a project you can be proud of, if its possible with the resources potentially available to you.

And yes reading is very good, its like producing a tv show in your mind, much more work than watching tv and depends on knowledge of printed words, arguably reading has more brain processes per minute than even starcraft 2, depending on your skill with it.

Also the sports that help the most with the brain were golf tennis and it was table tennis I think for the third not sure.

The three smartest ways to exercise tho are brisk walking/jogging, swimming, and weight lifting as those three increase lifespan the furthest, swimming being the best.

Gaming makes doctors make less mistakes, videogames are grand for the mind, not just one but many probably. And games that are not turn oriented (no pauses) are better for the mind, portal is an example of a game with little action and a some frustrated thinking, I don't think its a smart game because your mind is brainstorming to get an idea to solve the puzzles, its not constantly performing actions as much as an action game would do, and action games speed is of importance, action gamers vs gamers who played games with pauses, the ones with pauses were smarter than average people, but the action gamers were just as smarter but also responded consistently faster.

Also the body has to be healthy to support healthy brain activity. That and using the body tends to require more control than one can have in videogames. Except videogames you dont need to worry about injury or fatigue and you can have more constant action depending on game and sometimes more intense action than possible irl.
academic success is based on obedience, conformity, and adherence to rules and rhetoric.

intelligence quotients are based on social conformity to the expectations of the aristocracy from the 15th to 21st centuries, and focus largely on the common held tenets of the ruling class, with heavy focus on post Poisson/Laplace French Mathematics.

Actual intelligence comes in several forms, including how fast you can read, the capacity for you to enunciate properly, whether you can solve puzzles, the ability to memorize images or texts or events for short or long periods of time, affinity with numbers, and problem solving skills.

Wisdom and Intelligence are often mixed up.

Generally speaking, a person who is perceptive, learns fast, has a good memory, and a knack for solving problems is considered intelligent. Being Tech savvy is also classified as intelligent.

Intelligent people think about things. They ask questions. They read multiple subjects, and they tend to write extensively, rather than compressed, twitter like statements. Intelligent people look to nature for solutions to problems. Intelligent people tend to be able to maintain images and ideas such as blue prints or details from rooms better than others.

Hm, and do similar versions of said things that you are actually more interested in because being more interested in it mean you are willing to work harder to achieve results. If you like techno and not blues for instance, look up some of those and remember them instead.

How could I become more intelligent? What are some things to look into to gain acquire more intelligence and in turn also gain the respect of the people around me?

Thanks, all.
start reading more. scientist have found an association with reading and iq.
Correlation does not imply causation. I know plenty of people that read constantly that are dumb as hell.

Aside from acquisition of knowledge directly from what you're reading... it isn't really an intelligence builder. It may, at most, quicken your thought processes or expand your imagination, but I wouldn't say overall intelligence. The street smarts vs book smarts thing is quite real. You learn so much more from doing than reading. Immersion is quite related to intelligence... so long as you're observant.

Upon googling you seem to be correct.

Fanatical Zealot

I read somewhere that playing a musical instrument makes you use more of your grey matter, as does juggling. Try juggling and learning to play an instrument, to broaden your mind. You may just get better at those things, but it could help you in other ares of life, by being quicker or making connections faster or something. Or simply allowing you to see things in a different light.

Or make you learn how to get good at things. Music is as such where you have to read how a bunch of notes are, learn to play them, and then learn to memorize them. Then, you have to apply that wrought memorizaiton of exact tones and notes and whatnot, and then be able to play it, artistically, to make it sound good and fluid. It's a lot of memorization, to real application in something to real life, to refining and making it look artistic. And then free form jazz, holy crap, that's even insanely harder, it's like good improvisation mixed with raw skills.

Crazy stuff. Could improve your mental acuity, could simply make you better at playing instruments; might get you respect from people, who think playing the trumpet or piano is cool or whateversz.

Work on being someone who can be open to information and also has a want for it.

A lot of people think they are smart, but all they do is seek knowledge which affirms their views. And even when they seek new information, they view it through a biased lens. The smart people, the truly smart ones, don't just view knowledge, but try to experience it. And when they seek knowledge, they try to view it with as little bias as possible. They try to make it raw for themselves, not processed.

Its a lifetime of work to do.
