If you are worried about your ultimate destination, first seek salvation, then afterwards learn exactly how you should live your life in Christ.
Am I the only one who noticed the insinuation here? Is it just me, or is he doing this in order to distance himself from Loki and make it easier to dismiss Loki's proof?
You probably are. But he fails to see that we all have free will. There are different versions of an afterlife.
Guy's basically insinuated that Loki's not Christian, though...except that Loki is Christian, and from how I read his opening post he makes that pretty clear by stating "I'm not trying to say that my denomination is better than yours".
Oh, and while we're on the topic of being in a church and such...I never made any sort of oath to be Christian, actually. In fact, age 12 is when I had my break with faith and moved on, first to outright atheism, then eventually into agnosticism. I have nothing against the Christian god or Jesus, however, I personally dislike styling the Christian god as "God" or giving it any sort of title because I don't follow that religion and that god is not my god. That's why, whenever talking to a Christian, I will use "your god" when referring to the Christian god. Then again, I also refer to said god as "it" because of what's said in the Bible - if YHVH is truly "the Alpha and the Omega, everything and nothing", and all that, then logically YHVH is genderless and should be referred to as an "it", not as a "he".
As for Jesus? I like the guy, and if I met him I'd shake his hand, thank him for bringing his teachings into the world, and then take him to Loki so that Loki can apologize for his fellow Christians distorting or ignoring certain parts of said teachings. In the sense of things, I consider him Rome's version of John Lennon - think about it, both of them taught love and peace, and hell, if you look at most depictions of Jesus you could put him in hippy clothes driving a repainted VW Microbus and he wouldn't look out of place in the slightest. In fact, I bet Jesus himself would probably be sickened if he came back and saw what people had done to his teachings and what people were doing in his name.
The thing with me and church services is that the proselytization part irks me. I've been to two services this year (a funeral and a memorial service), and both times I've run into aspects that are condescending and border on being outright insulting towards non-Christians. The funeral wasn't that bad, but the presiding official at the memorial made a lot of not-so-subtle hints regarding death, and also played a song called "The Gospel Train" where one verse is
extremely condescending towards non-Christians. I don't mind Christians in general, but when anyone gets self-righteous like that I tend to get irked and want to recite Matthew 7:1-5 to them for trying to convert me via condescension and insult. Jesus outright said not to judge others and to open your own eyes before telling your neighbor to open theirs, and a lot of "Christians" (evangelicals and fundies in particular) ignore this when dealing with non-Christians. Probably that whole "convert by the sword" mentality, but if you're going to be condescending towards me for my belief system, why the hell would I want to affiliate myself with you?
