You know what, if Obama thinks that guns are bad, why does he have his daughters' school protected by guns? Why do the Secret Service that protect him have guns?? Go ahead then, put a ban on guns, Obama...

Probably has something to do with the fact they are high-profile targets for enemies of the US. Imagine the morale the mujahideen would have if they executed the children of the President. If anything, the public having greater access to firearms would increase the likelihood of an American committing these acts too. Given every President to be assassinated was by another American.

What is your argument?

There's nothing wrong in banning guns typically used and particularly effective in mass killings, regardless of the fact that this will not result in ending gun violence, regardless of the fact that this does not address "root causes" of gun violence or mass shootings, it's practical and may save lives now, and the only price to pay is bit of inconvenience for gun fanatics.

Other ways of ending gun violence more generally (such as studying dangerousness, violence, and intervention, of course in relation to economic structures and social conditions) should be pursued, but that's no reason why we can't pursue practical solutions either.

Does banning guns prove to lower violent crime?

That's not the point, the point is to practically disadvantage violent crime.

Does the person about to commit murder think twice about doing so because using a gun is a crime?
The biggest hole in such logic as this is that the only people such a law would affect are those who do not commit crimes. All others would proceed as usual.

I never argued it does, I said the goal was making crime itself more impractical to reduce the degree of violence.

And how did that work the last time the US tried Prohibition?
