1. Culture: The question is, is this in your face cultural divide growing and causing Americans to feel more isolated and forced into little sports teams? Believe it or not I actually often find a lot of the conservative Christian midwest/southerner types liberals hate to be more down to earth and friendly than the smarmy yuppy types. Sure they may vote for rich conservatives, but they tend to have less money to work with and seem more HUMBLE.

Well, that's really subjective. I come from a liberal family and they're extremely nice and considerate to everyone they meet, especially people who wait on them or are checking them out.

I live in a red state and generally the conservatives I interact with are very polite and very nice to me. Then again, I am a white girl who dresses inoffensively.

One of my best friends is Mexican and one of my close cousins is half Japanese and Filipino and I've seen the bullshit they go through from these conservative types.

Not all conservatives of course, but I've never seen a liberal treat someone of a different ethnicity the way some conservatives do.

2. Gadgets/Materialism:

People on all sides are feeling pressured to get the latest 60" LED tv screen, the newest Apple gadget, the latest smart phone, the newest video game to be cool.

Even the Occupy kids seem to be complaining about first world big city probems(omg, my Latte wasnt made right...my laptop doesnt get wi fi in here) Sure, the whole anti evolution/anti gay rights thing is archaic and sad...but I've begun to almost feel sorry for Christian conservatives/Southerner-Midwesterners that all the liberals make fun of and put down

Why though? If they have horrible views and are prejudiced why do they deserve pity?

Anyone who supports the GOP supports keeping sexual minorities from having their rights recognized and destabilizing the economy, not to mention turning the country into a Christian theocracy.

As a party, the Republicans have become more and more radicalized and stalwartly offensive.

3. The Future
But the big question: Could we ever see this cultural divide erupt into something more serious?
We've seen hate filled right wing radio influence extremists, we've seen Occupy leftists destroy property en masse...and we've seen this total alienation in people as the have and have nots and the gulf of disparaged incomes widen with neither Democrats nor Republicans truly caring.

Apparently my conservative step-father is preparing for the collapse of the U.S. by literally sailing around the Bahamas and buying property to go to... "just in case".

I think people are subconsciously, some even consciously, preparing for the world as we know it ending.

I admit too that I've found myself thinking about what would happen if the government collapsed and what I would do to survive and take care of my family if I have to.

We live in scary times and I hope that it's just nationwide anxiety and paranoia and not a legitimate threat.
