Welcome to Gaia! ::

Something I'm not sure I see talked about...while last year a spotlight was cast on the political rift in America(conservative tea party vs liberal occupiers) I've begun to notice how sharp the cultural divide has become. This weekend I did the usual grocery/supplies shopping with friends, and I was utterly struck by how different the motif is between Target and Walmart.

These days Target feels like a strange mix of Urban Outfitters, Ikea, and a Japanese stationary store. They carry trendy hipster clothing, owl stuff, Ikea inspired home decor, indie rock cds,
Domu Kun, organic vegetarian food, etc. Most the people in Target seem yuppy or upper middle class.
Then you go to Walmart. Now mind you BOTH Target and Walmart have the SAME exact prices, and most everything at both is made in the same Chinese Sweatshops. But the difference could not be more extreme. You see giant promo standees and displays for John Cena, Nascar, Rodeos, Country Music stars. They specialize in xx-xxxl clothing, lots of American flag motifs(tho nothing is made in America) half the people seem to require scooters to get around. But again, the same exact prices as Target.

To me this serves as a kind of analog or microcosm for this current snapshot of America.
Where on one side you have the smarmy smug latte sipping, pandora ipod shuffle Whole Foods listening Obama worshipping yuppy/cool college kid left...and then the beer-bullets-bible Tea Party right wing who "hates having a commie socialist Muslim" for president and wants to roll back the clock in America to less progressive times.

1. Culture:
The question is, is this in your face cultural divide growing and causing Americans to feel more isolated and forced into little sports teams? Believe it or not I actually often find a lot of the conservative Christian midwest/southerner types liberals hate to be more down to earth and friendly than the smarmy yuppy types. Sure they may vote for rich conservatives, but they tend to have less money to work with and seem more HUMBLE.

2. Gadgets/Materialism:

People on all sides are feeling pressured to get the latest 60" LED tv screen, the newest Apple gadget, the latest smart phone, the newest video game to be cool.

Even the Occupy kids seem to be complaining about first world big city probems(omg, my Latte wasnt made right...my laptop doesnt get wi fi in here) Sure, the whole anti evolution/anti gay rights thing is archaic and sad...but I've begun to almost feel sorry for Christian conservatives/Southerner-Midwesterners that all the liberals make fun of and put down

3. The Future
But the big question: Could we ever see this cultural divide erupt into something more serious?
We've seen hate filled right wing radio influence extremists, we've seen Occupy leftists destroy property en masse...and we've seen this total alienation in people as the have and have nots and the gulf of disparaged incomes widen with neither Democrats nor Republicans truly caring.
There's a rift here in Whiterun; and can neither magic nor the passin' of time make it right again.

Seriously though, your voter turnout isn't that great. Perhaps the less vocal/extreme ones truly are the majority, but that they don't make for good entertainment and subsequently fall out of the spotlight.

A person is smart. People are dumb, panicky, dangerous animals, and you know it. Fifteen hundred years ago, everybody knew that the Earth was the center of the universe. Five hundred years ago, everybody knew that the Earth was flat. And fifteen minutes ago, you knew that humans were alone on this planet. Imagine what you'll know tomorrow.

HAHA! Where is that from?

It should be amended to say "and 1 minute ago you know that your friend just took a s**t and lol'd at a youtube video thanks to a facebook tweet"
Wow, you really make a lot of topics.

Pock, I can dispell that illusion in a hurry if I drag you down here and force you to live for a few weeks in the hills. You just might not be used to those sorts up where you live.

Repeat; come down here and constantly put up with them, and your sympy will fade FAST. I know mine did, and they're the people in my back yard.

But remember, Pock; no matter who loses, Capitalism always wins.
Being American is a choice. If they don't like the conducted polarized stupidity that comes with it, they only have themselves to blame. We shouldn't have to coddle them.

Men in Black, one of the best lines from it.

I try not to judge a culture by its stereotyped outliers, which is what you seem to be describing.

I prefer judging them based on inane criteria, like the design of their currency (South Africa wins) or the beauty of the surname of their leader (Sarcozy is pretty fun to say, but I'd have to give the grand prize to Medvedev).

You confuse me...as I always thought you kind of had a lot of generally uh...conservative leanings in interests/views. But then again it's some people thinking because I favor leftist stuff I must like Obama or star bucks. I tend to forget you live or are used to the really boony parts of America where "boyuh, you dun belong round these here parts" might not be an exaggeration for people of color or certain sexualities.

I think what I was meaning to say is, I sometimes feel like the yuppys are more rude and always in a rush...while conservatives fresh off church at stores seem more like they take their time and are more down to earth. Im too poor to really fit the modern American middle class lifestyle.

I think I told you this very same thing, minus the Target/Wal-Mart comparison (very good analogy, because I absolutely despise Target, but I find all the cashiers at Wally World to be utter retards).
I think part of it is you find a lot of bleed over coming out from the internet into the real world.
What I mean by that is you see all the little idiots running around playing internet tough guy, then they go into the real world, and forget to turn off their 'bad a**' switch.
Rather sad, when some little idiot starts flapping their mouth at someone twice their size and weight and then realizes that they may have just crossed a line, and there is no little red X in the corner to exit the problem with.
I've really reached the point where I have absolutely no desire nor interest to travel north ever again. I'll stay back in the south where everyone can continue to claim we're slow because we don't talk like an auctioneer on meth.
I think it's going to get much worse before it even begins to get better, if ever.

My friend and I noticed that, after not seeing each other for a year (other than Battlefield 3, ooh-rah!) and catching up over thick, black coffee we were both doing useless s**t on our phones instead of talking.

We called this silence; 'textual tension'.

That bugs the crap out of me, when you're out to dinner with someone or multiple people and they're sitting their using the internet or texting constantly on the phone. I tend to notice girls doing it more.

I actually heard him saying that line in my head, which sounds crazy, but the internet tells me that I am not alone in this phenomenon.
