I know many GLBT people are dissapointed that the selfish christians have again succesfully played keepaway with the word marriage and they feel the US and maine have s**t on them again. The fact is that we have won a much more important victory in the past few months and marriage pales in comparison.
You see, we have finally been added to hate crime legislation that makes acts of violence against GLBT people be treated the same as acts of violence against people of different color and other differences. Gays are closer than ever to having protection in the workplace with many states actually adding job protection to the protections that other groups have from discrimination. Soon, hopefully congress will pass an act repealing DADT and Obama has said he would gladly sign it and allow gays to serve their country in the military with pride. I have never been a supporter of marriage for anyone. I look at the entire institution and it makes no real sense to me whatsoever. This lifelong commitment crap does work for straights. It is selfish. It mungs up our court systems with a bunch of high school relationship crap. My god I have never seen adults turned into immature children faster than with divorce proceedings. They are petty, insulting, whining little brats who would have gotten a good beating if the judge was their parents. Why gays want to be involved with all of that is truly beyond my comprehension. Why that was considered more important than prosecuting bigotry in life and prejudice in the workplace is beyond me. The entire government involvement of marriage should be ended and litigation of this religious institution should be given back to the church and they can spend trillions of dollars on divorce proceedings. The only people who really profit off of marriage is the industry of divorce lawyers who are pretty much right there with insurance CEOs, Nazis, and that green sludhge that forms on the top of stagnent water. So, shouldn't gay people be more involved with getting DADT repealed and the introduction of federal protection for them in the workplace? Once those important steps are done we can worry about the smaller steps of adding gays to the corrupt and pathetic institution of marriage which only really effects gays who want to get married and not the entire gay community. adding the story of Bill and Steve: The story of Bill and steve: Bill and steve are gay. Bill had a child when he was young and the mother was not the best of people so Bill has custody and the mother has limited visitation due to personal problems and legal issues. It works for Bill because he has a good job and loves his child, and he also has steve who loves the child and the child loves steve. Steve is war vet who is presently in the reserves and has a professional civillian job that came mainly from the education and training he received in the service, and he does his reserve time with commendations. Steve has placed a lot of his money into a little town home which he presently lives. All of a sudden the state Bill and steve live in starts to allow gay marriage and Bill and Steve decide life would be great if they were to formally join their partnership and get married so that their family can be one and receive the benefits many straight people get. So, they get married. They are not the first so like most married couples their local newspaper has a little marriage announcement which they thought was appropriate for their partnership. That friday Bill goes into the office and someone shoes him that they saw the announcement. It goes arround the office and Bill gets conratulasted by most of the people in the office. Not thinking much of it Bill goes about his day. He does notice the word f*****t a few times said around him, but no one is there when he turns around. He ends his day finding a chocolate milkshake has been dumped on his car and someone has scratched the word f** into his paint. He reports it to the cops and his boss. He goes home and steve has already left for the weekend at the base. The next Morning Bill wakes up and soon he heres steve et out of the car and is getting the mail. Perhaps they let steve off for the weekend. Steve comes in and slams the mail down and tells bill how he has been dishonorably discharged because the guys at the base heard he was married to a man. While steve is ranting bill rifles through the mail to find a letter from his wife's lawyer that they are suing him for custody of his son because they feel he is an unfit father because he is married to his gay lover. They think everything will be OK. Monday comes and steve goes into his regular job and informs them as he has to that he has been dishonorably discharged for being gay. By the end of the week steve has gotten his pink slip from his job because he got a customer complaint and they feel he is not performing his job well enough. He has also gotten a letter from his homeowners association that tells him that they are fining him 1000 dollars for leaving his garbage can out for an hour longer than allowed last week, and that i he violates any more rules they will look to have him removed from the neighborhood. Bill's kid was suspended because he got into a fight at school because some of the kids tried to beat him up for being the son of a gay father. The principal is suggesting that they send their kid to a school for troubled kids so he can have the supervision he needs despite the fact he was an A stiudent up until this point and has never had any other problems. Bill is being called f*****t at work regularly, and his human resources department and the state labor board have told him that there is little they can do because there is no protection for him under the law. Steve has tried to sue his workplace for unfair dismissal, but every lawyer including the ACLU says there is no laws that protect homosexual workers. Bill's wife has actually gotten a judge to give her custody because Bill is a dangerous parent who might be molesting the child, and his lawyer is saying it doesn't look good for him because the family court lawyer he has has repeatedly judged against gay fathers. All of this damage because Bill and steve were not protected against bigotry in the workplace, school's, courts, and their communities before they got married. |
