I know many GLBT people are dissapointed that the selfish christians have again succesfully played keepaway with the word marriage and they feel the US and maine have s**t on them again. The fact is that we have won a much more important victory in the past few months and marriage pales in comparison.

You see, we have finally been added to hate crime legislation that makes acts of violence against GLBT people be treated the same as acts of violence against people of different color and other differences. Gays are closer than ever to having protection in the workplace with many states actually adding job protection to the protections that other groups have from discrimination. Soon, hopefully congress will pass an act repealing DADT and Obama has said he would gladly sign it and allow gays to serve their country in the military with pride.

I have never been a supporter of marriage for anyone. I look at the entire institution and it makes no real sense to me whatsoever. This lifelong commitment crap does work for straights. It is selfish. It mungs up our court systems with a bunch of high school relationship crap. My god I have never seen adults turned into immature children faster than with divorce proceedings. They are petty, insulting, whining little brats who would have gotten a good beating if the judge was their parents. Why gays want to be involved with all of that is truly beyond my comprehension. Why that was considered more important than prosecuting bigotry in life and prejudice in the workplace is beyond me.

The entire government involvement of marriage should be ended and litigation of this religious institution should be given back to the church and they can spend trillions of dollars on divorce proceedings. The only people who really profit off of marriage is the industry of divorce lawyers who are pretty much right there with insurance CEOs, Nazis, and that green sludhge that forms on the top of stagnent water.

So, shouldn't gay people be more involved with getting DADT repealed and the introduction of federal protection for them in the workplace? Once those important steps are done we can worry about the smaller steps of adding gays to the corrupt and pathetic institution of marriage which only really effects gays who want to get married and not the entire gay community.

adding the story of Bill and Steve:

The story of Bill and steve:

Bill and steve are gay. Bill had a child when he was young and the mother was not the best of people so Bill has custody and the mother has limited visitation due to personal problems and legal issues. It works for Bill because he has a good job and loves his child, and he also has steve who loves the child and the child loves steve. Steve is war vet who is presently in the reserves and has a professional civillian job that came mainly from the education and training he received in the service, and he does his reserve time with commendations. Steve has placed a lot of his money into a little town home which he presently lives. All of a sudden the state Bill and steve live in starts to allow gay marriage and Bill and Steve decide life would be great if they were to formally join their partnership and get married so that their family can be one and receive the benefits many straight people get. So, they get married. They are not the first so like most married couples their local newspaper has a little marriage announcement which they thought was appropriate for their partnership.

That friday Bill goes into the office and someone shoes him that they saw the announcement. It goes arround the office and Bill gets conratulasted by most of the people in the office. Not thinking much of it Bill goes about his day. He does notice the word f*****t a few times said around him, but no one is there when he turns around. He ends his day finding a chocolate milkshake has been dumped on his car and someone has scratched the word f** into his paint. He reports it to the cops and his boss. He goes home and steve has already left for the weekend at the base. The next Morning Bill wakes up and soon he heres steve et out of the car and is getting the mail. Perhaps they let steve off for the weekend. Steve comes in and slams the mail down and tells bill how he has been dishonorably discharged because the guys at the base heard he was married to a man. While steve is ranting bill rifles through the mail to find a letter from his wife's lawyer that they are suing him for custody of his son because they feel he is an unfit father because he is married to his gay lover. They think everything will be OK.

Monday comes and steve goes into his regular job and informs them as he has to that he has been dishonorably discharged for being gay. By the end of the week steve has gotten his pink slip from his job because he got a customer complaint and they feel he is not performing his job well enough. He has also gotten a letter from his homeowners association that tells him that they are fining him 1000 dollars for leaving his garbage can out for an hour longer than allowed last week, and that i he violates any more rules they will look to have him removed from the neighborhood. Bill's kid was suspended because he got into a fight at school because some of the kids tried to beat him up for being the son of a gay father. The principal is suggesting that they send their kid to a school for troubled kids so he can have the supervision he needs despite the fact he was an A stiudent up until this point and has never had any other problems. Bill is being called f*****t at work regularly, and his human resources department and the state labor board have told him that there is little they can do because there is no protection for him under the law. Steve has tried to sue his workplace for unfair dismissal, but every lawyer including the ACLU says there is no laws that protect homosexual workers. Bill's wife has actually gotten a judge to give her custody because Bill is a dangerous parent who might be molesting the child, and his lawyer is saying it doesn't look good for him because the family court lawyer he has has repeatedly judged against gay fathers.

All of this damage because Bill and steve were not protected against bigotry in the workplace, school's, courts, and their communities before they got married.

Agreed. Gay marriage will be worked out state by state, but it is not the number one issue. The hate crime thing was stunning, and a victory over DADT would be way, way more important than a gay marriage bill IMO.

i personally am very sad that maine didnt go thru, but i would like to point out that the reason glbt people would like marriage equality, its not for the sake of just being married, but all the rights and benefits that come with the marriage aren't being offered to civil unions or partnerships. like the whole child custody issue, the fact that insurance isnt able to cover a civil partnership, and things like that. its not right to discriminate at all. so yes, they glbt community have made major leaway, but still has a long, long road ahead of them...

Maine was a small loss in comparison to the grand victory of the passing of the Matthew Shepard Act. That bill proves that the president gives a s**t about us (LGBT). He can't control what happens in the states, but he can influence national law.

Will the DADT repeal also apply to transsexuals? I've kind of wanted to join the military they say I'm "not fit for duty" because of my "condition." I've been told it's my HRT, but I've heard of men who had their balls blown off who take testosterone and are in the military. So I don't get it.

I also think marriage is stupid. Why the hell should people get privileges just because they're not single? People say, "Oh, it's because they have kids." Okay, give them those benefits WHEN THEY HAVE KIDS, not when they get married. rolleyes

I definitely agree with your point, I think a lot of gay people are ignorant to the REAL issues with our community. Marriage really should be taken down a peg. Gays and transsexuals are still being murdered every day. That's a pretty big issue. We should also work on ourselves, so many people within the LGBT spectum commit suicide, and we're instead focusing outside of ourselves and blaming everyone else.

Does DADT apply to transsexuals now? I mean, it's not exactly a sexual orientation issue...

I'm not sure. I just know that "trannies" aren't allowed to enlist.

DADT is largely a disclosure issue. Transsexuals "come out" too. I probably wouldn't, because I pass as a man. But issues could arise if say my fellow mates tried to rip my underwear off for some reason. Then hell would break loose.

I think they would still have the medical issues to worry about. What would happen if you were in a situation that cut off your testosterone supply, would it be kosher for someone with a v****a to shower with the ding dong gang, etc

The military isn't necessarily like the movies. There are dorms, individual bathrooms/showers... I'd have 2 or 3 roommates, we wouldn't shower together.

I would be getting care from the insurance provided through the military. Unless I was sent to war or something, my testosterone supply would not be an issue. Consider it like any other medication a person might need while in the military. If needing medication is an excuse not to let people into the military, a lot less people would be in the military.

Lastly, if my testosterone supply was cut off for some reason (it would have to be something like going to war, and even under those circumstances I could probably still get it, but for the sake of argument let's assume I couldn't), losing testosterone isn't an immediate threat to my health, I just just start having periods again after a few weeks off of it, and after a few months off of it my muscles (that I gained through testosterone) could start to break down and my body fat would redistribute back to a female form. Meaning only SOME of the benefits of testosterone would be lost. I would lose stamina, get moody and PMS and s**t too. Which wouldn't be good. But my life wouldn't be threatened. My voice would stay deep, my body hair would still be there, I'd still be a man, just a bitchy, vagoo-bleeding one. And I'd soften up a little bit after a few months, which I would not like.

But losing my testosterone would require an emergency situation, where for some reason supplies could no longer be shipped to us. It would have to be in the brink of brutal war. I think my mojo would matter less to me if I was starving to death.

I saw that bill signing online that day. The LGBT center at my school threw a big party for it too. I'm hoping the DADT does get repealed so folks can stop being kicked out of the military for stupid crap.

You'd still have to go through boot camp, which DOES just have a bunch of dudes in a long line. Even if you went past that, you'd still have an issue of someone with a v****a bunking with a bunch of dicks, no pun intended.

Only if I had to disclose, which I don't exactly plan on doing.

Also, I'm pretty sure transsexuals are allowed in boot camp.

If you have to shower with a bunch of dudes, like boot camp, it would be kind of hard not to. Also, all bases are different. Some have individual shower stalls, and some don't.

I thought you said you were denied entry to the military because of that...
