Tipsy Smoker

Starting this thread because I found two conflicting sources and would like to get opinions.

Brain Disease

or

Behavioral Problem

They are both based on similar testing, but I think the behavioral approach makes more sense. After all, an addict can change their behavior. Of course, this was also explained by using behaviors to manage a disease. Your thoughts?

It's complicated.

Addiction isn't a choice, it's a condition. You don't "choose" to be addicted, you can only "choose" not to fight an addiction.

There are addictions you can break through willpower. Some addictions are easier than others, some people will have more willpower than others.

Which brings me to another point. Some people have addictive personalities; it's harder for them to fight an addiction. It's closest to being a disease with them, I suppose?

I don't like to refer to addictions as "diseases," as it disavows all possibility of self control.

There is no reason to break an addiction when the alternative is dealing with humanity sober.
