A Soldier at Heart. You wouldn't understand unless you grew up in the military enviroment... I'll try to explain it the best way i can... It's one who isn't fully a soldier but knows what it means to be one...

A soldier is one who protects and fights for his country but there is a lot more behind that. A soldier is someone who knows why they are fighting. A soldier is one who knows that war, isn't just a game you played when you were little. They know it's hell, they know the sacrifice. They know what can happen. They know they might not ever see their family again. They know they may be captured and tortured beyond recognition. They know they could die a slow and painful death. This goes through every soldier's mind before a mission. They take a deep breath and go 'For my country and the ones I care about.' and they Soldier on.

I understand that fully.

Some soldiers are fighting because they want a college education, not that they agree with the war. Some soldiers are lured in with fancy ad's and lies at recruitment centers and when they find out the reality of the situation they try to leave or lead pissy lives. The news doesn't run many stores on soldiers who dessert but they exist.

Some soldiers are like you described - but not all.

You're assuming that Marines can form cogent sentences. Maybe if you sat them down in front of brightly colored blocks with cartoon representations of emotions on it, you might be able to communicate with one, but trying to get a Marine to explain something to you is far worse punishment than simply letting him beat you.

Honestly, I couldn't give a fig about my country before, during, or after- if anything, I became even MORE radically apolitical and apatriotic. I don't hate America, no, but I don't get teary eyed when I think of her, and if I had died for the sake of a collectivist-nationalist buzz word I would have been pissed. For me, and while I can't speak for everyone I'm willing to bet many others as well, it wasn't "For my country". It was "For my buddy", simple as that.

I don't get into service bashing. They all need to work together or the job doesn't get done. The only time I even joke about it used to be with my ex son-in-law, who was Air Force, and that was just to get him riled up because he was so cute and sweet when he was riled up about it.

I know it was a joke, but it's just not my thing. Now other kinds of jokes I jump right into! I can think of one right now that would relate to this, but I don't think it's quite the right time smile !

But see? That's where the fun is. Everyone riffs on everyone else. One squad riffs on another squad. The platoon riffs on the next platoon, your company riffs on the guys across the street, your MOS hates a different but somewhat related MOS, services make fun of each other etc etc etc. It's just layers and layers of good natured riffing stacked on top of each other, that's how you know where you are, but whom you make fun of. Sure, when Haji walks onto the scene everyone shuts up until that ******** is dead, but afterwards they go right back to teasing each other; it's fun and it's the best way to stay sane.

Yeah, I know it's all in fun. I would just like to have us united. But the jokes are SO rolling in here I almost want to join in! I literally am laughing here.
