My contribution: My cat, my business. You don't own my cat, you don't care for my cat, you don't buy the food for my cat, you don't come over and clean up after my cat. I do. If I want to declaw my cat, that's my business. If I want to shave my cat, give him a mohawk and dye him red, it's my business. So, unless all you "No, don't declaw him" people really want a say in whether or not I declaw my cat now or in the future, pay up and buy him. Otherwise, stay out of my business.
hooray for slavery!

Pay up, then hon. I don't tell you what to do with your cat, you can't tell me what to do with mine. Fair is fair.
Cats aren't objects. Just like kids aren't objects, and you can't do whatever you want with either one just because they're your responsibility.

On the contrary, you're free to do whatever you want with them, so long as it does not endanger the animal/child.
Oh I think some people would get some calls if your kid showed up to school with a mohawk. Even more people would get calls if they find out it was forced on the kid.

You continue to avoid the subject at hand whilst blatantly telling me to leave. Well look here, sir. I shall not be bullied by some ignoramus with immovable preconceptions about who I am and what I represent. You, sir, are a racist.

I don't discriminate. I point out stupidity when anyone does it, regardless of race, age, or gender.

You're out of excuses, troll.

I have not yet begun to fight, you illiterate boob.

If I were illiterate, then how could I read and respond to your posts?

If you had the intelligence to respond to that comment, then you obviously ignored my previous replies, which brings us to your suffering from "selective hearing" where you see or hear only the things you want.

The irony of all of this? You're off-topic.

You'd be surprised how many calls really come though about kids with mohawks. Forced is another thing, but still.
While we are on the subject of "off topic", You continue to ignore my comment earlier. The URL in me signature clearly demonstrates the inhumanity of declawing cats and what monsters humans can be. Whos off topic now?
Back on topic, I have to wonder - if you are so desperate to keep your precious sofa pristine, why not adopt a cat who is already declawed? No extra suffering is caused, and those of us who don't mind spending 5 minutes a week trimming our pets' nails have nothing against you.

Although I have to admit that the idea of laser nailbed ablation muddies the waters for me. If that does what it says it does, and literally removes ONLY the claw, then the animal only suffers from lack of defences and inability to stretch properly, not permanent pain and balance issues.
I don't really see what the problem is. If someone wants to have their kitty declawed, let them. It's not like you're abusing your kitty. The cat has to be a baby when it's done, and it probably won't even remember it. neutral

Obviously I have no control over another human's actions, but that doesn't mean I cannot do anything about it. As a volunteer with a rescue group, I can make sure people who adopt from us know exactly what declawing surgery entails, and we require adopters sign a contract they will not have the animal declawed. Yes, we have reclaimed animals when people decide to go ahead with the surgery.

We also work with local vets; thanks to us, there are only two vets left in the immediate area who will actually perform the declaw surgery. We canvassed neighborhoods and asked people to sign a petition-most did; our sister rescue group for dogs is doing the same to encourage vets to stop cordectomies. Many of the vets were already denying declaws long before anyone from our group even approached them.

Thanks to you and your group for the work you all do.

It actually is abuse and more and more people are beginning to realize that. It isn't just removing the claw. It's taking out the last knuckle and since cats walk on their toes instead of their pads like most animals it causes them the have to shift their weight backwards causing them to be unbalanced in their movements. This puts them in pain which can cause all sorts of behavioral problems as well ending up in the cat being given up and destroyed.
A adult cat can have the procedure done. It's not just for kittens.

They don't do anything special except have you waste money to buy their food and are there to make lolcat pictures.

That is why we are working towards change to make this practice illegal.
