It's similar to the issue of fanatical Christians; the majority of Christians are not people who go about condemning others, but all it takes is a few to behave badly. Suddenly, an entire group of people ends up labeled and stereotyped.

sooo true soo true
we are all alike in someway
I understand, but when we're talking about like, 35% of them are fanatics and 65% are "alright" then it can depend. Imagine there are 5 billion Christians(probably not but whatever) 35% of that seems like nothing compared to 1,000 but if you took 35% from 5,000,000,000 then that would be alot of people. So many that infact it can seem logical to at least be "aware" of the possibility.

6.796 billion is the current given population of Earth
1 Billion is generally accepted as the number of Christians.
1 Billion < 5 Billion

Also where does the assumption of 35% come from?

Since you're making up numbers I believe that 85.3454% of atheists are annoying whiny god bashers with no cause.

The UK has a high number for crimes of assault because we are a very polite and law-abiding country.

Before flamers decide to come in and bash this thread, it is not just another 'God isn't real!!!' or 'Find faith!!!!' thread. So please keep your hot headed comments to yourself.

So on to the real thread. I am personally an atheist. But I don't go around yelling at people that have a religion telling them they're morons for believing in nothing. I honestly have a respect for people that have faith, its just not for me. Now another one of my friends also happens to atheist but strongly disagrees with the way I conduct myself. He believes that atheists should conduct themselves in a way that strongly opposes the church, any religion at all really.

This is the common pose of atheism, that is, in the eyes of outsiders. I personally have never seen an atheist, other than him, that go around openly bashing religion, I've only heard of them. Call me sheltered, but I don't think thats what most atheists really are like. I know I'm certainly not like that. So I guess what I'm asking is this: Are there atheists that you know personally that are extremely opposed to the church, or do you agree with me in that atheists are quite civil?

So feel free to open discussion, but please none of the same old flamers from the other side of the belief line.

I could say the same about Christians. Here is one that I recently found that many Christians use:

"yea.. but we know the truth and we will go to heaven for it while you pay for it in hell so we get the last laugh assholes..."

I am Christian but I think... really? wow that is one of the lowest blows anyone can give.. (also illogical since atheists don't believe in punishment so it's not much of a threat in the first place).

You (and I) are in ED (probably). You will be asked to defend your stance. Smack me if I am being an idiot. I am going to sleep.

Most people are civil. It takes more energy to be unreasonable than to be civil, and most are too busy to waste the energy in the first place.

Yeah, extremists tend to ruin the party for everyone.

Nurse Lisa I presume?

You know, the one good thing about extremists is the level of entertainment they frequently provide while behaving like rabid crack addicted weasels, though I think the weasels probably have a better sense of ethics.

Yes, for the moment it's Lisa. biggrin

There are people that impose their beliefs on others. Regaurdless of the common conduct of the believers in any faith, these louder individuals will always stand out the most in the stereotypes people have imagined.
