actually, since there are so many atheists in here, do ya'll mind if i ask a question that's really been bugging me?

i've never heard of pascal's wager, but here it goes: anyway, my question is this:

as an atheist, where do the basis of morals come from? i mean, where just ******** up monkeys, who really don't have laws and morals, if they take something, they want it. why are so much more advanced?

Atheism is oddly enough like Christianity - they all have some root beliefs, but their are many different types of atheists and their beliefs can vary. It's a very wide category, and I've heard of types of Atheism that involve spiritualism in nature, a kind of scientific faith, rejection of all faith, etc...what I'm getting at is that Atheism can mean something different to each Atheist you meet. Most will be civil, to answer your question, but what I'm getting at is not to assume Atheists believe - or disbelieve - anything in particular or have really that much in common with one another (except for, of course, rejecting theism, but besides that).

After much debate with the voices in my head, we all came to the conclusion that we're atheist. Now, if religion is your shtick, that's great. Congratulations! Seriously! If your religion makes you happy, that's ********!

Now, if you consult/preach to me/the internet about religion, it's my duty as an atheist to point out where your religion has holes and why/how I think/know that it's a fabrication.

We're not just "******** up monkies" you idiot, we're a completely different species. That's like saying a lion's just a ******** up cow, for God's sake.

Morals come from how a person was raised, the society they were brought up in, and personal experience. If a human being lives their lives with monkies, I imagine they would share the same morals as a monkey.

actually, i think you did quite well. and yes, the one thing all atheists have in common are a disbelief in a god or gods.

Bigger brains - we can figure out that 'smash and grab' isn't (usually) conducive to a harmonious society, and a harmonious society is better for us in the long-run. Not that ******** monkeys can't figure that out too, just not as sophisticated (they have their alphas and their omegas, but less middle-management).

Altruism is an evolutionary trait.

The bible is a really lousy place to look if you want morality anyway. Any firstborn son of an Egyptian could tell you that. Anyone that has read the thing could tell you that.

If you read the new testament instead of just looking in the Old, then you would see why Christianity is a good place for morals and junk.
