Welcome to Gaia! ::

As someone who has look into and supported feminist causes, I was always perplexed by one issue that feminists cannot seem to agree with. Not only do they disagree, but both are very passionate about it. It has to do with clothing. Clothing obviously covering a woman's body has generally 2 sides to it. First off, you have the cliche no clothing pornography. This issue varies wildly between feminists. First you have women who thing that who are against it says it objectifies women, gives men the idea that they are just a piece of a** and that it is degrading. Then you have the women who say that women should be allowed to freely express their sexuality and have their body be viewed as beautiful art. Both sides hold completely different views on it.

Then you have the opposite end of it. Too much clothing. And by that, I mean the Muslim Burqa. Some women view covering from head to toe as demeaning to a woman, showing inequality between genders in a sexist religion and that covering one self to show lack of worth. Others say that the Burqa makes it so that a woman is protected and that men fall for a woman not just for her looks. Then you have women who say that not allowing women to wear the Burqa is undermining a woman's religious freedom which it does.

I just find it weird that the issue on clothing is arguable for feminists and I don't know why. Why is it that out of every issue that feminists face, clothing is the only issue where feminists are split on the issue?

Feminists are split on a lot of issues. It might simply be that this issue is more often in the media because it's fairly straightforward. It's also something people have to deal with every day. The way you dress directly impacts the way you're treated. Nobody really cares about trans issues and how to define "woman" for example.

I thought this was going to be about feminine clothing vs more masculine or gender neutral clothing as that's something I still struggle with every time I get dressed.

I think there are more issues that feminists are split on. Like abortion. I'm a feminist, and I know many pro-life people. I'm pro-choice, and I believe a woman can make her own decisions regarding reproduction without the men in office helping. But other feminists that are pro-life say that every woman has the right to be born. This doesn't make much sense, considering gender-based abortions are illegal in most areas. Not exactly, but abortion is illegal before you can tell a gender. I love your observations, though. As for clothing, I don't have an opinion on it. I don't believe it's any of my business what a man or woman wears. People say I should be on one side or the other, but I didn't think clothes would be an important issue. I thought it would be more on the lines of equal pay, job opportunities, etc...

There are plenty of clothing that can compliment a woman's figure without making them look like a slut.

Be it just my opinion, but it wouldn't kill em to dress a bit more modestly.
One who observes hijab = One who believes in cultural modesty. biggrin

Women should not live in fear with being whores.

Then they shouldn't dress like one.

Would really help if we had better hard and fast rules on what constitutes "look like a slut"

There should be no shame associated with being a whore in the United States, or any other country on planet earth. You would need to give me a well articulated and logical argument for not including the few, into the majority inside a society.

I will not discriminate against those where social injustice is common place, promoted, and encouraged.

No. Men should grow up, act proper, and not encourage hate among their male-community counterparts.

Eh, skirts that run almost to hip level, shirts that let their breasts almost completely hang out and run up so high that they expose their rib-cage.

That sort of thing.

Probably more of a personal thing than anything. I don't really care if the belly-button is showing, but when it starts running up as high as the fork of your ribcage...eh.
