Okay, I concede that my examples are rather lacking. I apologize because the creation of analogies is not my strong suit. Anyway, onto a specific point:

Cutie-pie Sleepyhead
So, essentially your preferences change without your input? I am very happy I am not you. I made a conscious decision that I like a certain color hair, a certain build, and other peculiarities in my partners.

So you decided x, y, and z characteristic within a person? Are you sure that you simply weren't just naming the characteristics that you like within a person which was already decided by your unconscious and such?
Yes, I'm sure. I can attest that my preferences have changed, drastically, without the surroundings needing change at all.

Just because your preferences have changed without your surroundings changing doesn't mean you've chosen those characteristics. You might simply find those characteristics desirable at one point in time and then eventually unconsciously have those preferences change. It doesn't mean you've chosen them. (Your unconscious doesn't merely absorb your surroundings. It could also be influenced by who you interact with and what you think and ponder on.)

Alright, you are confident in this concept so I'm going to be straight and just ask you: Is this anything more than mere conjecture? Can you cite sources that agree with you?

My Idea
After reading an article a friend sent me, A White Woman Explains Why She Prefers Black Men, I realized that there's a big implication: the desire could be based on racial assumptions and stereotypes that, just because they're "positive," don't make them any less pernicious, objectifying, or, to put it bluntly, racist. Want to find out about racial fetishism? Thenread more.

X

More from the article
Whether you have "jungle fever" or "yellow fever" (you date blacks or Asians exclusively), you would be described, in the parlance of the day, as having a "fetish." One thoughtful person has explained a fetish this way:

Sexual fetishism in general is the sexual attraction to something which is not in itself a sexual object, such as feet or leather. Sexually fetishizing a person or group of people however means reducing them to objects, important only in their sexual function or interest to the fetishizer. Race fetishization means effectively reducing all members of a racial group to a monolithic whole, only valued in terms of their racial stereotypes. You are hearing racial fetishization when people talk about how black men have big penises, Asian women are exotic and submissive . . . just because a stereotyped characteristic is a "good" characteristic, that doesn't mean it's not racist.

Yeah, I got evidence.

Oh, it seems that in my argument, I have made claims while lacking a priori and a posteriori evidence. So I must concede that my argument isn't very persuasive with other people unless they find what I state "common sense". However, common sense isn't enough because it can differ from person to person. I must concede on this point.

However, I must then extend the same question to you. Do you have sources (or an a priori argument) that can be used to validate your point? Otherwise, we have both failed to prove our point. Of course, if you do have evidence or such an argument, that's a different story.

Sadly I don't have the ability to get access to the Journal of Family Issues; they had a good article on this. There are tons of articles, with articles inside of articles, on the issue though.

I'll return... soon. Night.

I love it when boys dress as girls and looks prettier, it's mad funny.
Whoot you have awesome parents. Mines care too much about what people think, so when i dress like i want they always have some s**t like "what will people think?" to say

Maaaaaan, my family never gave a s**t about that. ^_^ We're Rican, we MAKE the beat of the drum and DANCE to it! I'm going to get my hair dyed green and gold later this month. whee
My aunt's doing it for free and it's the closest to "gay" I'm coming aside from the whole wandering around in dresses thing. My dad occasionally whips out the unisex outfit too, earrings and all. rofl
It's more of an oblivious thing than anything.
"Hey, my son. Why's that guy lookin at me like that?"
"I dunno"
"Is it the earrings?"
"....."(looks)"...LOL"
Only "gay" thing about me would by my naturally "cute", little-boy-girl voice. It's not the "gay accent' voice, it's a bit of Costa Rican accent+Harlem accent+Why the hell haven't you hit puberty yet voice. And I'm an adult. sweatdrop
We had a drag show tonight. It was interesting.

Cool i have not been to one yet, but i sooo want to.

I hope you don't mean that I should look them up myself because then I'd be proving your position for you. You're supposed to provide your own evidence while I'm supposed to provide my own. I failed to do my part so I should look for such evidence or form an a priori argument.

Ok i'm officially jealous of the fact that you have such awesome 'rents. I'm going to dye my hair pink/blue/purple as soon as i';m out of my 'rents house hehe.

Hey that Rican accent mix with the little boy-girl voice can, work for you though. I think the way you describe it it's sounds pretty cute, so you should be happy about that.

It's simple.

It's just another small time internet company trying to find a market niche by restricting their clients to a particular majority. I believe their logic in creating this, "blackpeoplemeet.com" is to make coloured folk stop and think, "Hey, if I go on this website, I won't have to worry about getting matched with a white person I don't want."

Sure, the exact same effect could be attained by changing your preferences on any old dating site, but there's no money in that, is there?

Yeah that's me. I did signs for a day. Totally over it already.
So I treat my women like crap. Sue me.

Mom just died in June but dad's still around. ^_^
And I love my accent, thank you ^_^ I'd rather this than the San Fransico accent. rofl
...And the hair thing's more of a "Hey, you're grown, we're gonna give you a gift. Pick a hair color!"sort of thing. whee Gah, no, you don't want my family. We're CRAZY! But in a good way.

No. The first example is broken, sexuality is not a choice, in regards to asking about sexuality that's the end of it. What goes into choosing a partner is far more intricate but also off-topic and a red herring.

Racial preference is a choice, if it were not those who tended towards race X when they were young and finally ended tending towards Y when they got older shouldn't exist. Yet a lot of these people do, especially when it comes to fetish-like behavior.

So, refutation by example.

No, we can influence our preferences, even our sexuality, but we cannot decide our preferences---any of them. That means that we have a say buit we don't have the final say.

Well... I know a way. But it'll break your mind.

I mean that literally. It's a required step in the process.

It makes sense. People tend to go for others romantically who have the same traits. Despite how "liberal and open-minded" we proclaim ourselves to be interracial relationships are few and far between statistically.

This.

Besides culturally speaking Blacks look for things a bit differently when looking for a mate than other groups. Plus, the fact that Blacks still don't have as much internet access as white folks due to the economic divide that still exist in this country. So yup make perfect sense and it makes sense that these commercial air only on BET. Just like the Christian dating sites are only mention of the Christian channel.

Or how Girls Gone Wild only air on channels that are marketed to young adults, who are usually white and somewhat educated. (Spike, Comedy Central, and a dozen more)

I don't see what's the point in even mentioning it really. As people can still BS online anyway and I doubt the site can stop you from accessing it if you aren't Black.

Just be thankful I replied to your post.(Kind of) Oh and if you enjoy any or all my post you should take a peek inside my Gaia's journal there's more! (Usually) I'm opinionated to a fault. But I still love me for me cause I'm B &P!
