They should be teaching abstinance not how to protect yourself.

Conservatives piss me off...

I agree that 11 year olds shouldn't be having sex, simply for the reason that most of them don't know how to protect themselves but... abstinence? GTFO.

It's not as if they'll listen, anyway.

Well then I guess you can just let them have sex become parents, because birth control doesn't always work, and drop out of school. Oh, or since condom don't always work how about getting AIDS?

It is a safty thing. Many people don't want to even be thinking about there little Sarah doing anything (sorry about the name, it was picked at random). They don't want to know about it and because in most cases kids today are getting themselves into that kind of trouble teachers want to try and prevent as much of it as possible. Even if you don't give kids protect, they are still going to experiment and try things.

It's one of those, "Don't do it", and they turn around and do it anyways. In most cases there trying to figure out what is going on. They may hear there older brother or sister talking about it and want to also experince it for themselve. I mean, what has my big bro ever done wrong to me?

At the same time though, when I was in grade 6 and 7 the taught us, that it is still dangerous and if we do decide to do something along those lines then be careful. I'm not saying go to a nunnery, but still using your brain when it comes to these things is imporant.

Abstinance, is the best way not to get
A) stuck with a child
B) STD or anything else - but that still doesn't mean you shouldn't do it. Scaring your child out of having sex is not going to make the problem any better.

When a condom is used properly, there's only a 2% chance of pregnancy. The 2% thing is in cases of the condom breaking, which only happens if you're a complete idiot.

Most of the kids will probably only be getting condoms to show off to their friends anyway.

And there's always a risk of an STD.
When you get married and decide to have a kid, you still are at risk, unless you know FOR SURE both partners chose to be abstinent.
And since there's no way to tell except to trust someone..

Why the emphasis on AIDS, by the way?
Why not just STD's in general?

You're right. They should be left in the dark about birth control and disease prophylaxis well after puberty and instructed that abstinence is the only way to keep their d**k from falling off/their life from being filled with babies. Fear of disease and pregnancy work really well to keep teenagers from having sex. And if they do it anyway, s**t, they deserve whatever they get. Teaching them to protect themselves is misguided and can only lead to...um, s**t, less disease and underage pregnancy, I guess, but who says that's a good thing? Better to fill their little heads with as much misinformation about condom failure rates as will fit.

Someone said 6th grade isn't elementary school. It depends on where you're going and how your district is structured. 6th grade was elementary school at every school I've been to - middle school is 7th and 8th, and high school is 9-12.

Well actually you could have them tested for STD's.

Some STDs don't show up on tests.

One more measure to make it easier on the parents to foist the responsibility of raising their kids onto the schools. Parents won't teach their kids why they should wait, they're too busy to do anything but say something like "don't do it, or you'll get sick or get stuck with a little brat just like you". Not saying that schools do a particularly good job of getting the "whys" and the "hows" through kids heads, but I think someone should, and if it has to be the schools, (sad as that may be,) good.

I think Planned Parenthood should have a guy at the schools the same way D.A.R.E. used to/does (do they still do that?). Same information distributed on a widespread basis, a nice "Questions? Problems? Call this number" poster on a wall. and ya got it covered... and if the Planned Parenthood people hand out birth control - which I think is necessary with these little morons we've got running around nowadays opening their legs earlier and earlier for anything that moves - good on 'em.

Later.

I don't see a problem with it.
Abstinence-only education doesn't work.
If we teach protection measures combined with distributing contraceptives and remind everyone that abstinence will keep you safe, what's the problem?
