Kind of; furthering yourself on Gaia does not require you, at any point, to buy that letter. Someone must, but not neccessarily your person.

Considering that Gaia Online is a business, likening Scientology to it is not the best way to defend its validity as a religion.

No other religion but Scientology requires this. It reeks of business transactions - a certain monetary amount must be handed over in order to receive services or goods in return. And businesses, especially businesses that bring in the kind of profits scientology does, are NOT eligible for tax-exempt status.

If you asked your institution to show you where said money was going do you think they'd oblige? Churches, in order to keep the exempt status, must keep their books; it's part of the deal to prevent people from just claiming they are a church to get out of taxes.
