Battle rifles fire full-powered rifle ammunition, assault rifles fire intermediate caliber ammunition. (And you can't get either in a month 'cause they're class 3.) Also, I would not want a rifle like that. xd

I mean- people complain about the kick of the Mosin. Just think about how much a selective fire Mosin would hurt if you fired it faster than you could work a bolt.

AR-15 fires 5.56 NATO. AK47 fires 7.62x39mm M43. AR-15 has a muzzle velocity of 260 m/s faster at 975 m/s. With similar ammo purposes (neither are armor-piercing or anything special), the 5.56 is going to cause less carnage unless it tumbles or ricochets. 7.62 is by definition wider than 5.56 and at a slower speed is likely to ricochet off of bone after it looses enough velocity. AR-15's rifling is also better than AK-47's I THINK, and that will decrease tumbling of the 5.56 round.
You forget that the AR-15 is much, MUCH more accurate, though. Also, AR ammunition tumbles a LOT. (Well, it depends on what ammo you use.) Either way, I wouldn't trust either of them to quickly take down a zombie with a chest shot- I'd trust that to nothing short of a full-power rifle cartridge. (Such as the .30-06.)

The 5.56 is more likely to tumble inside a skull, but with a chest shot, the 5.56 is also more likely to just zip right on through the zombie. It does in normal people.

I agree that I'd rather have a weapon firing 5.56 though, because the higher velocity and rifling is also going to add to accuracy, and that means I'm more likely to place shots where I want them, and lets face it, if I'm going to waste ammo at all, I'd like to waste as FEW shots as possible, as there is no guarantee I'll find more any time soon.
Way things are looking, though, I'm probably going to end up getting an SKS instead of an AR-15. Not because it's the best zombie weapon, but because I don't have a lot of money and I need a cheap intermediate-powered rifle. The AR-15 is not cheap. xp

You can get them for less than one grand in some places.
Cheapest I found was 650. Cheapest I was willing to get was 700, but not at that price.

Instead, I'm probably getting a $350 SKS in excellent condition with a spare plastic stock (with pistol grip) and a 20 round magazine. The SKS fires 7.62x39mm rounds, the same that the AK-47 fires.

Not an awful buy. I'd be willing to spend twice as much on a decent handgun, even though I can't really afford any of it. Most of my plan involves hoping to get a better job or looting to be honest. XD

Not the hatchets though. I've got the hatchets. I'd like better ones, and more of 'em, but I've got at least something for now.

Anyone looking for an SKS can see them on Gunbroker.

There's more where that came from. Probably not unfired, but plenty in nice shape.

I really can't tell if they've had corrosive ammo discharged in them, though, and that's a rather big concern of mine regarding these weapons.

It not a problem as long as they are cleaned afterwards. I shot corrosive ammo in my CZ-52 and let it sit for a WEEK without any surface rust or pitting. I just cleaned it out real good when I was done nad made sure I put some protective oil on just in case.

Not everyone does that, though. Lots of people think guns like the SKS and AK-47 are completely invincible and don't clean them at all. >.>

On a slightly less technical note, what kind of rifle does everyone favor, in terms of action; bolt action, lever, semi-auto? I like a lever action, just because I'm left handed and you can find them with a straight ejector. Totally ambidextrous, as opposed to a bolt action or semi-auto, which have to be modified or special ordered with a left side bolt or ejector. I imagine some are built to make that easy, but I don't know which ones at this point.

Also, what happened? Finally got CB'd?

prefer pump to lever, because t tears up my hands less. But, they are a hell of a lot more rare.

Pump action rifle? Damn, didn't even know they made it, though it makes sense. The lever doesn't bother me, but I kick-box and used to do a lot of wood and metal work. Lots of calluses, not a lot of pain.
