Long Range: A Sling, with practice slings are amazingly accurate and ammo is everywhere (rocks, pebbles, debris, and [the best part] any calibur bullet!). A blow to the head would be fatal but the most important reason is because they are silent. A gun shot should and would attract obvious attention.

Short range: An iron pipe about 6 ft. long utilized as a bo. The most important part about short range weapon is hitting them before they get to you, and being able to handle a swarm. You can fill the pipe with fabric to prevent sound and a solid blow to the head/neck would be fatal. Anyone with bo experience would be able to handle multiple targets using a swinging and poking motion and it would definitely help if you were being flanked. Assuming the zombies are only going to move toward you lacking the basic intelligence to hunt) you should have no problems.

How heavy do you think a six-foot iron pipe is, exactly?

Watching the "Top Sniper" show on the Military channel, where units from a variety of military forces around the world compete in sniping challenges to see who is the best sniper.

So quick question for you guys (note I'm completely uneducated on the subject) what in your opinion is the best sniper rifle which you could access, and would you use a sniper? if so, why or why not is a sniper a viable weapon in the zombie scenario?

Fres, what weapons would you carry?

It depends. Most sniper weapons are actually nothing more than standard weapons (sometimes slightly modified from base) in the hands of competent shooters. The rounds themselves are standardized and the shooter puts enough rounds through his rifle to learn it quirks.

To tell the truth, you don't want the large caliber weapons that make up sniper weapons in this situation anyway. They are both large and cumbersome. I wont deny they are effective. But it is generally better to leave large guns for large people.

I used to set up lights for the musicals at my high school. The lightstands are a series of rolled steel pipes, which are only marginally heavier than an iron pipe, but won't ******** shatter if they fall over. The ten foot pipe weighed a good 60-70 pounds. So you're looking at a 35-40 pound quarterstaff. have fun with that.

Melee:
Notes: Melee should always be a last option. Hand to hand combat against an opponent who knows neither fear or pain is not exactly practical. That said I would use these weapons.

Katana: good for close combat.
Not really, no.

For un-armored opponents, you can't do much better then a well made katana. But the level of care and maintenance a katana requires to keep it form falling apart makes it impractical as a survival weapon.
While I do agree that katana take an ungodly amount of maintenance to stay effective, I disagree that they're the best weapon against zombies. You want HACKING and CHOPPING, (if you're going with a bladed weapon) ergo, something like a falcata, axe, machaira, kukri, or if you're gutsy, a maul. The katana is a slicing and cutting weapon, and BONE DOES NOT CUT. You want something with a lot of weight and a thick blade that can break bone with as much "ease" as possible, as well as be easily withdrawn from the zombie after being struck. The katana simply does not fulfill any of these rolls.

Maybe you should return to reality.

You ever swing 33 pounds spread over 6 feet around for hours? I bet not. Ever carry it in your hands for a couple hours? While RUNNING? Bet not. It's really ******** heavy, and really ******** cumbersome.

Bone does cut, or more accurately it fractures along the path of pressure that the blade causes. I have done so with a Spada through a pig's spine, and the Spada I was using, by it's design, had less cutting power than Katana would have with the same blow.

The problem with what you are calling chopping weapons, ie: end heavy blades like the Falshion, Kukri and the Falcata is that they need to be short to be controlable in a fight. A longer blade designed for cutting, like the Katana, delivers the same or more force when used in a cutting motion due to it's leverage, despite it's reduced weight.

Edit: And, for the record, I did not say that a Katana was the best weapon in a zombie survival situation. In fact I said it is impractical in such a situation. I said it is one of the best weapons for going through un armored flesh. Which as much as I hate to say those words, they are true.

Look, I can swing a maul with relative ease, (though not much speed,) but 33 pounds is really goddamn heavy. To put it into perspective, the maul I use to chop wood weighs 4-6 pounds. And that is just the head.

Have a nice time swinging that kind of weight around more than once. neutral
