Welcome to Gaia! ::

Last week, Al-Qaeda leader Ayman Al-zawahiri announced that Al-Qaeda would merge with the Somali militant group known as Al-Shabab. There is to be a gathering today outside of Mogadishu in support of this merger. My thoughts are, is this a major thing? I'd never heard of Al-Shabab before now, and would adding them to Al-Qaeda change anything?
Al-Shabaab wants to join the international fight so that they can get international support, more funding and foreign fighters to join their cause. Their fighters have already been identified as part of militant groups in other African nations, but I am not convinced we will see their influence expand significantly. They wield very little power internationally, mostly because they're dirt poor.

They want to put Somalia under Islamic rule, but the population doesn't want that, and US-funded Ethiopians want the region under control of US market interests, and the population doesn't want that either. So they fight the people and the Ethiopians simultaneously, with little resources other than what weapons they can borrow from Islamo-fascist countries like Saudi-Arabia and anti-Ethiopian nations like Eritrea.

I knew the horn of Africa was a generally corrupt shithole I just didn't know the details of it. If they get Al-Qaeda funding though, wouldn't that improve their chances or at least increase their nuisance level to the locals? It doesn't sound like a thing to just dismiss either way because this seems like a way to increase their funds, weapons, and recruitment.

All of the Americas have been, that is why there is illegal immigration. They just run north north, where ever that leads. And the countries on the way in central america, are brutal when it comes to that s**t, the US is actually pretty nice about illegal immigrants. Mexicans are not, in the least, to the Hondurans and Guatemalans running up and away from their countries.

Either way, I don't like visiting poor countries very much. It's just a ******** of in-your-face sales and chatting that I am unsure how to deal with in a polite manner, so I scurry along like a stressed-out weirdo.

Al-Qaeda doesn't have funding worth anyone's time anymore. What they can do is encourage fighters from other countries to join the fight in Somalia, which Al-Shabaab has attempted to do in the past. It's just crazy old men with beards with too much influence over the angry, discontent youth.

Just go with the flow and learn a few phrases. They don't expect you to sit and listen to an hour long sales pitch for their arthritis-stricken donkey. Be cool and they usually smile and let you go along your day.

Al-Shabaab sounds like something I'd find on a takeaway menu.

I didn't know they'd lost their funding o: .In that case it seems a rather pointless maneuver, unless they are going to try to subvert the political system or something instead of blowing it up.

How odd.

I am a native Spanish speaker, I understand them, just like I understand people in the US...I just don't like talking to random people @_@. It's a personal issue. I love learning about them and hearing their stories, if they talking to my mom or my grandma or whatever; if it's to me, I get stressed.

South/Central America actually wasn't so bad. Egypt...o Egypt. I went 1 year before the craziness and zomg. Yapyapyap, buybuybuy >_<! Every tourist site herds you through a bazaar to get in and another one to get out. It is exactly like what you see in the movies. Needless to say I was stressed the hell out and did not enjoy the bazaar experience at all.
Gathering outside of Mogadashu?

I suppose someone should bomb there just in case.

Who knows, maybe it will hit something useful.

I think it's just a sign of desperation. They've lost, but they don't know it yet. The Horn of Africa never harbored the belligerent type. They've got their own culture, their own laws, and not socialist dictators nor theocrats has been able to take it away to this date.

North Africa's bazaars are extremely non-Western in that there is so much intensity and easily recognizable sales tricks. I went to Morocco once and even that was quite the sweat-inducing affair what with the 7-8 merchants fighting over me in arabic after I showed interest in some crappy little souvenir. Was I more paranoid I'd have construed it as a fight over which cuts of me they get to carve from my bones and sell at the meat market. >_> Thankfully my friend was born there and came to the rescue shortly after. He said they were fighting over who could give me the lowest price and throwing insults at one another lol.

I hope they truly have lost, but with the move to extremism here in the US and all around the Middle East because of our invasions...idk. I worry. The middle ground of live and let live seems to be disappearing.

Yea, I know they don't mean harm (I think, I was a woman and they did oogle in a way they didn't do to their own >_< ), but I am just too used to the emptiness and silence of the US. Being thrust into that mayhem was emotion_0A0 lol.
