Does anyone here actually breakdance?

i used to many years ago. my parents sent me for classes but i lasted for onli 2 months. but its cool. i enjoy watching the B-boys in my school do their stuff.. esp during basking seasons. we have some girls doing break dancing too. its cool i tell ya.

Are you a boy or a girl? I never went for classes, I was just in my basement, listening to techno of all things and all of a sudden six-stepped. Then I kept hurting myself trying to learn the power moves which is stupid because it helps if you actually took acrobatic classes first. I still enjoy it, but it just has become so commercial now, it seems to have lost its underground status. But that's okay, as long as everyone remembers it's roots and not something that Usher "did" in his video (which of course, wasn't him).

I do and have for a while now. I teach classes for basic uprock and footwork, aswell as an advanced class (We mostly just jam at that one and help each other progress).

Do you have any conditioning exercises? Footwork isn't just something you can jump into. Unless flexibility and acrobatics are prerequisite.

Other then stretching, top rock and up rock are what you should do to warm up. And they are a must if you plan on getting better. Acrobatics aren't needed at all, unless you plan on wowing people with huge back flips.. and flexibility helps if you've got it. It makes a lot of things far easier, except for basic stuff like six step you don't really need to be all that flexible.

As long as your muscles are warm it's ok to just jump into some footwork.

As for powermoves, try to stay clear of any real power moves until you've learned the basics to a fair extent such as up rock sixstep and some small freezes. Otherwise you'll be branded a 'power head' which isn't a good thing unless you just plan on showing off for friends. Most importantly, style.. as long as you've got style you'll make it as a b-boy/girl.

Hope this helps.

well said... foundation is a must... and a lot of people are lacking greatly in that area i find.. they go for what looks coolest... which i guess is power (to normal people.. i prefer footwork and style to a great extent)
as for warm-up's... top rock is a good one yes, I'm also a fan of just a short warm-up i used to do in martial arts (stretching and push-ups/sit ups mostly) other then that... just make sure your warmed up before doing anything involving flexibility otherwise you will probably pull something... (and when you intend on breaking in a public lace like a club or dance, "raving" I find is a great warm-up, but thats mostly because aside from stretching i get s**t loads of cardio work there... and I enjoy more then just b-boying)

I don't think you can teach someone to break...You can teach them the history and the philosophies, but it's wrong to try to control their intellect and limit their creativity. Sure there's foundation, but with all the new style heads popping up now, the definition of foundation is changing, too. Ken Swift and Storm's foundation brought about Crumbs and Remind and Reveal and Iron Monkey and Rainen while others decided to go a different route like Dyzee and Rawbzilla and Kujo and Frankie Flave. They all know the history and philosophies n stuff but they've come to the top of the game on their own ways. To me foundation is the knowledge of the dance and the understanding of it. That's what separates a bboy from a breaker or a breakdancer. Yes there is a difference.

I saw that ish(The Freshest Kids)...pretty ill.
Anyone have pics of them bboyin/bgirlin?

I just started up again. smile
BboyWings' sig looks pretty sweet. Nice freezes, there!

Liu, I love your sig, too. Haha, Jason uses C to get out of his punishment. Smart.

I don't have any pics, but I don't do freezes or anything snazzy like that. You have no idea how out of shape I am right now. I can't walk up 4 flights of stairs anymore! gonk
I got like 50 vids. Haha, half of which take up space on my computer.

And I agree with you Wings, you can't really teach someone, you can show them where to start though and give pointers on how to advance in which ever route they choose to take. For example, there's the crazy leg work and weeves like Dyzee does, or the Lotus s**t like Boo Rok... Or even that weird tweaked out s**t like Rawbzilla(I don't understand any of the stuff him and StuntMan do in doubles.. -.-).

So yeah, you do a move, someone tells their opinion and maybe gives some pointers on how to make it even crazier. Nowadays it's all about originality and stuff that noones seen before.

Also, your pics do look pretty dope BboyWings.. Where you from?

Currently working on 1 handed airbabies, hollows, and inverts (i'll get some pics of those sometime soon). I would've extended my left hand, but it would've went off the screen - don't want people to think i'm holding on to something. I can hold those for about 2-4 seconds varying. sad

I heard I stab my right leg on my arm too high -- is there a problem with stabbing it too high? It just feels natural to do so.
