Anyone know any good submissions to pull off when your opponent goes to stacked guard on you? Im tired of faild Knee bar and helicopter armbar attempts and pushing him away doesnt really suit my style...

I'm kind of a novice, but I'll try my hand at this. Usually I find the best way to avoid getting put into bad situations when I'm getting stacked is to go on the offensive, or atleast be active. If you expect that is what the person is going to do, you should try for a sweep when they begin to stack.

Assuming that doesn't work, I've often found success by scissoring my legs around their head to gain control again, and then pull them down and work for a triangle. It looks goofy but it works for me. Another possibility is if they're nearly standing, you can put your knees into their chest, and grab hold of their ankles and just rip it so they fall backwards.

But yeah, aside from kneebar attempts and whirling around for armbars, there isn't too much you can do. I think the sweep is the best idea. That, or you can just grip onto them for dear life since they're going to need to work to separate you to do any real work.

Yea Im very good at submissions from any positions except stacked guard...Sweeps are a better idea but Im just looking for a way to widen my arsonal because If I decide to go stacked guard on someone I pretty much know whats comming and its easy to defend...triangles dont work at the gym I go to because we do triangle escapes about 100 times a day but on someone who isnt familiure with the ecscape thats a good idea...

*Nod* I understand. I wish I was of more help, but I'm only like a white belt so my level of jits isn't all that diverse. Maybe something like the rubber guard would allow for more head control. If you control the head, you can control the body.

It also depends on how they're standing/squatting. If you can get someone to stand up, you could go for what I call the Frank Mir. You know, that kneebar swivel that he did to Brock Lesnar in their first fight. Of course, not everyone is dumb enough to stand up in someone's guard.

Lol right..once I go to the chill dog its over Ill get a omo/gogo plata str8 jacket or a triangle in 99% of the time but some people dont like to play the jits game and go for stacked...I go for the knee bar alot but I usually dont get the submit...and I hate giving up position...expecially when the match just started...
Well, I see what you're saying. I guess the answer lies in being critical, if you want to improve your game. Its smart that you're working on a position that you're weaker in, but do you think your takedown defense could be improved so you don't end up in guard as often?

Lol I pull guard in grappling matches... I love the ground game... I went to states in wrestling My senior year and It was my first year but I knew alot of stuff because Ive been taking Jits classes since I was 8...But yea I dont like being on top in grappling because I feel like im being controlled...I know more offense from guard...

Makes perfect sense, dude. I feel comfortable in guard alot too. Minotauro Nogueira feels like you have four weapons off your back: two arms and two legs.

Yeah, I'll keep that in mind. I am a little worried about trying to remember a bunch of kata though sweatdrop My memory isn't so great. But, I was really inspired by Lyoto Machida which might sound silly.

Yeah, I'm sure their instruction is still fine. I'm just a little put off by their new website. It use to be very mature looking and talked about their massive dojo.

The cool thing about the first school is they have weapons training. I'd love to learn a weapon.

Kenpo Karate is supposed to cover weapons but not until the advanced levels. You should do whichever you feel more comfortable with. It sounds like you might have more of an interest in more traditional Karate.

i hate places that say they teach karate, and teach weapons as part of the 'karate' curriculum....not saying you can't teach kobudo in the dojo as well, the only time weapons should be used during a karate class is when teaching weapon defenses, or when using them as motivation...but that's just my opinion

Every place has their own style...really there arnt alot of places that teach pure Karate how it was origionally ment to be...thats why there are so many different branches of it...I wish I could learn every style but theres so many and they expect you to learn so much over a long period of time..

*Nod* I'd like to learn something very traditional. I like the learning experience.

I wouldn't worry about learning everything there is to learn about martial arts. When it comes down to it all styles follow the same concepts. The same could be said for weapons.

the point is, the style is misnamed once you bring weapons training into it. karate means empty hand, if you're holding a bo staff, your hands are not empty.

Ello. I'm a brown belt in Hapkido, although I had a break when I was around 13 years old, so I've actually got the time to be a 3rd degree. Me step-dad is testing for his 5th degree in two days. He has his own dojang close to here and we just merged with one of the largest Hapkido schools in this region! We're also about to start teaching a class at the local college. Fun fun

Awesome! I have a 1st Dan in Hapkido. When you merged with the other school, did you change your curriculum to theirs, did they change to yours, or did you combine the two?
I don't really know much about Hapkido, I always thought it was similar to Aikido.
