I Had some Taekwondo when I was a lil younger. I am now doing Krav Maga and also working on Boxing, Muay Thai, and Brazilian Jiujitsu.

Hm, Krav Maga is good for covering good self-defense principals. It's a lot like Kenpo it looks like, just less "sciency".
Yes and its very VERY Aggressive (beacuse its your life is at risk win by any means nesscary.), "It gets the job done" I haven't seen a lot of Kenpo. Care to enlighten me what Kenpo is?

Abso-ofcourse-olutely! Kenpo traditionally is rooted in Chinese Chuan-Fa, a "direct version of kung fu. Kenpo is actually a Japanese term, and it uses some Japanese martial concepts like some circular motion, and jujutsu techniques. It revolves around 45 degree angles, and it's techniques are very quick. They're less effective power-wise compared to Taekwondo and Shotokan, but it's more than enough to get the job done.
(sorry if this is too long)
I took Kenpo for a year, and like you described Krav Maga, it's very "get the job done"y.
You know, I forgot the exact history, but the creator of the Krav Maga system first studied Hapkido in Korea and based his system off of a lot of that? Hazzah! (for some reason neutral ... pirate )
Zeh thread - tis dead again. Whats a shame. Anyone else is welcome to start other topics btw.
what do you think of MMA?
Well, to be honest I think it's a load of bull monkey. I'm not bashing anyone that is into MMA, but I think my reasons are fair: (btw, these don't cover all my reasons)

1. It's advertised and thought to be realistic fighting.
-Realistically, on the streets, we're not going to find ourselves in an octagon shaped cage (usually not in a cage of any kind really, and we're not going to conveniently be on a mat designed for grappling.

2. It's hardly "mixed martial arts" at all.
-Most MMA competitors focus on Jujutsu and Muay Thai (not all of em o'course). What bugs me is that the reason for that is it just gives a better, quicker flash to the audience. On top of that, what most MMA guys (/girls) seem to be doing is focusing on getting really good at 2 or 3 kinds of kicks and strikes. "Mixed martial arts" used to mean you have a broader horizon than that.

3. In later years - especially in the UFC - they've sacrificed more realistic rules for money.
-Back in the day, if one fighter nailed to other to the floor and had 'im in a good lock, he would be allowed to keep him there for as long as he wanted. Now, if it looks like it's going no where, the ref will come and break them apart. Gee, that's realistic too...

Anywho, that's why I dun't like MMA blaugh

im in fairbanks,AK so theres not too many that happen (maby like 2 or three a year) but everyone i know wants to see how far i can get so i figure ill try it out once.
Oh okay. I'm in southern california. Around here there's a little more competition, but that's because everyone and their mother wants to get into the ring, or either make a quick buck by teaching MMA to the people who want to.

Anyone ever become a teaching of their style?
nah i'm not good enough to teach yet.

but yeah i think MMA is pretty cool.i watch it all the time.it teaches me alot about fighting and stuff.

i want to enter in one of those MMA competitions but there aren't any around where i live.
Well, if you're into it enough in the future you may even be willing to travel for it.

Me personally, I prefer form competitions over sparring. It's not that I'm not willing to take a hit - I mean, my last master used me as a demonstration dummy - I just prefer to demonstrate raw technique in a competition. I guess that's always my main focus. I plan to open a school in the future, and when I do I really only plan to set aside one class a week for sparring (because part of me still really loves sparring).

funny thing, the dojang i study at actually sets aside a class every friday night for sparring. it works really well too, plenty of people show up for it and its really a lot of fun.
Sparring is fun! My very original master actually set aside a whole day for sparring. Evrey wednesday, the whole day, nothing but classes for sparring.

Can you guys explain the type of self-defense you study at your studio?
I trained American Kenpo, and got my black belt. I then when on to "expand my horizons" and learn BJJ and got into some kickboxing. I ended up starting kickboxing a little over a year ago, in the amateur competitions. Here I am a year and a bit later, 4-0 and fighting m first am MMA fight Oct. 4th.

I've been around and just about seen it all lol.

I also have a friend who did some Judo, and another who does TDK.

I only did American Kenpo for about a year. I liked it a lot but I never did any belt testing for it. It's good to see someone who has a Kenpo backround going into MMA.
