by the by, does any one know why some one would want to study 'XMA'? ('extreme' martial arts)
honestly...why study such and obviously impractical thing? if u like doing flips and cartwheels, cant you just do gymnastics?
Well, there is Capoeira, which is alot of fancy, flashy moves. Though, I think it's more of dancing game, but it was used originally by slaves to teach other slaves how to fight. But, as to why someone would learn a XMA, my guess would be to build stamina. And I don't see things like cartwheels and flips impractical, atleast not entirely. Sure, there are better options, but I'm sure there is some situation where they would prove more useful.
i've been trying to think about when a cartwheel/roundoff/handspring would be more useful than just taking a really big step or two back.
The only thing I could think of using a flip for (not a cartwheel - a flip) would be if you are running from someone and you end up at a dead end, you can jump off the wall and flip behind them... But that's about all I can think of.
There are a few things in Brazilian Jujitsu that are rather, flippish... or cartwheelish that can be used for passing to side mount.....
But its not really the same.....
I'll admit, flips seem more for appearance than anything, but a cartwheel is certainly useful. It allows you to pick something off of the ground (be it dirt, a rock, a stick, whatever), and use it against your opponent. Not exactly fair or nice, but when it's them or me, they're getting dirt in the eyes. Sure, you could bend down and pick things up, which, depending on what you pick up, could be good or bad. If it's something big, like a stick, it really doesn't matter. Either way they'll notice you picking it up. But if it's a handful of dirt or a rock, the cartwheel should distract them from what your doing.
Also, it depends on how you fight. Are you Offensive or Defensive? Me, I'm pretty Defensive, so cartwheeling away from my opponent puts some good distance between us. Distance is good, it gives me some breathing room and time to rethink my plan. Now, an Offensive fighter would, I think, prefer simple steps back, as it keeps them close to their opponent. Mind you, I'm not an Offensive fighter, so this is merely my speculation.
