Ahahaha! That is certainly funny. It reminds me of one day I was teaching a class of higher belt kids and we were ahead on material so I decided to teach them a jumping front kick (much like the one from the original Karate Kid). I demonstrated the kick, and then to help myself explain it I told them it was like the kick at the end of the Karate Kid (this was just before Will Smith's remake came out). They all looked at me confused and blankly. I said, "You guys do know what the Karate Kid is, right?" Some shook their heads, and a couple looked around to see if anyone was saying yes. One student raised his hand, and he was the oldest in the class. I gave them the homework of asking their parents to rent it for them and watching it.

XD Good idea. I tell you what, I didn't know how old I was until I started teaching. Now I realize my students dont know about half the things Im talking about!? What happened?

I'm only in my early twenties, but I remember growing up watching all kinds of older shows and movies (I Love Lucy, The Wonder Years, Happy Days, Star Wars, Karate Kid, and many more). It's a shame that parents don't take the time to instill in their children the magic of old things.

I'm only 25. ^-^
Couldnt get into Wonder Years, but you forgot about Cheers!

Haha, yeah, I watched Cheers too. And Three's Company, Saved by the Bell. Too many to remember.

Far too many... And they have no idea what they've missed!

I've heard some good things actually. Somewhat annoyingly the TV guide advertised it as the remake but when I tuned in it was indeed the original. Ah well, still fun viewing XP

Watch it if you get the chance. A lot of people had mixed reactions to it, but mostly that was because of how hardcore they loved the original.

I do indeed. I've be training for close to ten years, and I've been teaching for almost five. I just started my own part time program through a community center. I blend Hapkido with my curriculum.

Fair play, I was studying it for about 5 years, where I got up to blue belt. After that I kind of dipped out of it, didn't really go to training very often.
I'm back in college now and they have a club on campus, so I've decided to use this opportunity to get back into it properly. Hoping to -finally- get me red tag in Februrary razz

How often did people usually test at your old school? I always find it interesting when schools use "half color" belts. Everyone I've studied under has done that at least at higher belt levels, but my belt system uses only solid colors.

Well I was with two different clubs you have to understand, both are ITF, but the various schools will have sliiightly different syllabus's.

Apparantly our campus club tries to have about three gradings a year, and I assume provided you're ready you can certainly go ahead with them. As far as I know there isn't a mandatory waiting period between grades until you start getting up into the dans. Theres a lad who just go his red tag a few weeks ago and hes hoping to at least try for his red belt in the February grading.

I thought both WTF and ITF did the tags though, I suppose it dosn't matter, you can just collapse the syllabus in on itself and have twice as much stuff at each grading and whatnot.

WTF officially has no "in between" belt levels. Actually the Kukkiwon, which is the group that certifies the WTF officially only has eight forms before black belt. Most schools add a few forms for whatever reason, and so they add stripped belts to attach to those forms. I'm a proponent of the "less is more" mentality, so I only teach the eight Kukkiwon forms, so I'm able to have a solid color for each level (white, yellow, orange, purple, green, blue, brown, red).

Hmm now that is odd, because I had seen WTF practictioners doing the tags/stripes, but thats not an official requirement of the kukkiwon syllabus you say? Well that is interesting.

ITF goes white, yellow, green, blue, red, black, with tags for every colour that isn't white. That amounts to 10 kups, versus the eight you described, so actually really it dosn't sound like we cram -too- much more in before the black belt XP

Actually if you're curious, I -think- my old club has their syllabus up on the internet *rummage*

http://www.inta.ie/taekwondo/syllabus.aspx

Yeah, just the drop down thing above where it says "tae kwon do" and you can click on every kup, I got up to blue belt with this specific club before, but I'll probably just stick with my university club for convenience's sake for the time being. I mean its all part of ITF, so the patterns are the same no matter where you go. I find that the different associations just tend to have their focus on slightly different areas. INTA to me seemed rather balanced, while my university club (IUTF) seems to place more emphasis on sparring and competition. The RITA conversely places a huge emphasis on breaking.

Most WTF schools I've seen (and I've known a lot being among them) add a stripe to the highest two belts before black belt, but not as often for the lower belts. My master actually has a stripe in between each belt color after white (yellow, orange, green, blue, red), but mainly because that's the way his master did it.
The only reason the WTF has "official" belt requirements is for the sake of ranking in competition. What I really like about the Kukkiwon is that the curriculum is not extremely restrictive. Other than forms there are no exact sparring or self-defense techniques that have to be taught, but rather, the instructor has the opportunity to develop their own curriculum by integrating their own variety of requirements in addition to the forms.
New poll type thing is the up.
