Forms are about more than learning technique. They teach a variety of turning and stepping motions, and develop focus, control, and balance. All of that helps in a fight, whether or not one even uses the techniques of the forms. I find that is very often ignored when people are criticizing form training.
what i hate when people criticize form/kata training is that they're completely over looking the muscle memory gained through constantly repeating the motion. reaction is independent of thought, if you have to think about your technique you've lost, if your technique is reaction, well then you've got a chance.

Focus, control, and balance go a long way toward helping technique improve.
Good muscle memory is worth the time it takes to acquire.

I'll always respect peoples' opinions, but when some people make blatant statements like, "Forms, high kicks, and breathing techniques are all worthless, no argument," I get offended. But I don't fret over it TOO much.

lol, i respect the statements made by people with some sort of knowledge of what they're talking about. i will not respect those who speak through ignorance, those who are willingly ignorant don't deserve it. and the if it's an ignorant person who says it, i'll smile and ask if they would like to show me the error of my ways. ^_^

if some one can come up with a decent way to back up their statement i just say 'u have ur opinion and i have mine.'

What I should have said was, "I will always respect others' legitimate opinions." ^~^

lol, in that case i agree, but most people w/ any experience w/ a real martial art will realize form/kata work actually does work.

by the by, does any one know why some one would want to study 'XMA'? ('extreme' martial arts)
honestly...why study such and obviously impractical thing? if u like doing flips and cartwheels, cant you just do gymnastics?

Well, there is Capoeira, which is alot of fancy, flashy moves. Though, I think it's more of dancing game, but it was used originally by slaves to teach other slaves how to fight. But, as to why someone would learn a XMA, my guess would be to build stamina. And I don't see things like cartwheels and flips impractical, atleast not entirely. Sure, there are better options, but I'm sure there is some situation where they would prove more useful.

Some people don't know that all they're doing is XMA when they get into it. I don't have a problem with it when it is advertised as mere flash performance. But when schools are dishonest and say they teach self defense when it's really a lot of twisted wushu, I have a problem with it. To me taking XMA is like cheerleading - it's for looks.

i've been trying to think about when a cartwheel/roundoff/handspring would be more useful than just taking a really big step or two back.

The only thing I could think of using a flip for (not a cartwheel - a flip) would be if you are running from someone and you end up at a dead end, you can jump off the wall and flip behind them... But that's about all I can think of.

There are a few things in Brazilian Jujitsu that are rather, flippish... or cartwheelish that can be used for passing to side mount.....
But its not really the same.....

I'll admit, flips seem more for appearance than anything, but a cartwheel is certainly useful. It allows you to pick something off of the ground (be it dirt, a rock, a stick, whatever), and use it against your opponent. Not exactly fair or nice, but when it's them or me, they're getting dirt in the eyes. Sure, you could bend down and pick things up, which, depending on what you pick up, could be good or bad. If it's something big, like a stick, it really doesn't matter. Either way they'll notice you picking it up. But if it's a handful of dirt or a rock, the cartwheel should distract them from what your doing.

Also, it depends on how you fight. Are you Offensive or Defensive? Me, I'm pretty Defensive, so cartwheeling away from my opponent puts some good distance between us. Distance is good, it gives me some breathing room and time to rethink my plan. Now, an Offensive fighter would, I think, prefer simple steps back, as it keeps them close to their opponent. Mind you, I'm not an Offensive fighter, so this is merely my speculation.

like i said a big step or two will give the same result, and you'll have more control over your body, as well as be able to keep an eye on your opponent better.
