Welcome to Gaia! ::

For all of those who think marching band isn't considered a sport, YOU ARE WRONG!!!!!

I don't see our football team out there for from July 14-November 17 wroking their buts off from 8-12(midnight) druring band camp, 2 hours a day during school, sectionals for an additional hour, mini-camps on Saturday before a competition, then going to a competion that night. We work our butts off and get no accredidation for anything. No "Band won Grand State Champions for the 5th time in a row" on the announcements. We just get run over in the parking lot because people can't move their cars and we aren't given grass to practice on except for Thurdays when JV Football is done using it which we had originaly cleaned it up for our use.
Plus, you try marching 20 yards in 8 counts, BACKWARDS!!!
GO ALTO SAXOPHONES!!!
Marching Band is a sport by far.

I myself am not in band, for I am in choir. I am proud to call myself the cleanup crew, though. It's awesome because I get the best seat in the house for halftime show (right behind drum major, facing pit) AND I get to hang with the pep band!

All of my friends are in marching band, so I picked up their habits, including their sense of humor... I'm always stepping in time with my them xd

I can't stand people saying that ____ is not a sport. Especially those retarded football players. I'd like to see them do it. I remember some pretty interesting conversations...

Football player: "Water Polo's not a sport. I'll totally ram into you guys"
Polo player (who is also a band geek): "I think you'd sink, Mr. Roid. But if you insist, you'd have to catch me first."
Football player: "What the hell? That's HELLA easy!"
Me (polo player as well): "Why don't we just do a breath-holding contest to make it easier for all of us... I mean, he's a waste of a CPR liscense!)

Turns out that the band geek was a BariSax player. That's pretty damn beast, man.
lol nope question exclaim
Erm.... Excuse me.

sport
–noun
1. an athletic activity requiring skill or physical prowess and often of a competitive nature, as racing, baseball, tennis, golf, bowling, wrestling, boxing, hunting, fishing, etc.

Marching band defiantly fills that quota. Marching to a tempo of 180, rolling your feet, blowing into an instrument, producing good sound, using your peripheral vision to stay in line with everyone else, and remembering your music at the same time is called skill. Obviously doing this outside across a football field (Occasionally made out of turf which makes things ten times hotter) in 90º or hotter weather for at least five hours is physical activity. Also, marching bands go to competitions making it a competitive sport.

I believe I have made my point.
Kthxbai.

P.S. I am a proud Alto and Bari Saxophone player.
P.P.S. And will kick your a** with my hella big instrument if you even try to tell me marching band isn't a sport.
P.P.S.S. State Champs! Go Susky!

I'm curious, what do you believe makes marching band a sport?

try marching band at any HBCU and see if it doesn't answer your question
♠ After I did marching band last summer, I now sometimes wish I had joined the football team instead. sweatdrop
Even though marching band is a physically demanding I don't believe it is a sport. Just because there is a lot of exercise involved doesn't mean its a sport. That said I love marching bands, its just that they are entertainment. I would rather see a band like USC that plays great music than a DCI band that marches amazing. Its just more entertaining.

Marching band is not a ******** sport.
Stop trying to mix the music department with the athletic department.
Band doesn't have to be a sport to be respected, so just give it up.
Don't you dare insult cheerleading and say it's not a sport, or that it's easier than Marching Band, because I'd like to see you get tossed 30+ feet in the air, and I'd like to see how YOU feel when you get dropped.

All I can say is marching band IS a sport.

To those who say it's "easy" marching on the field - it's a lot more complicated than that. Every marcher has to be on the same step, on the same beat, and stay in line. You have to be constantly alert around you and, if you mess up, the rest of the band messes up. Therefore, it's a team effort to be in the marching band, so I don't see how "easy" it is.

To those who think playing an instrument is easy - you are soooo far from being wrong. It takes a lot of skill to be able to move your lips, press "buttons," march, and be able to maintain a good, solid sound. It also takes a lot of skill to be moving and still keep that sound. You honestly have no idea how hard it is to do that until you try it.

To those who say marching band doesn't have any physical needs - how on earth could you say that? You do realize that every minute being on the field requires each marcher to multi-task, playing their instrument, marching, staying in a line, and going to each position on the field, while looking at the field commander. I'd like to see you do that. We also have to do exercises, like jumping jacks, and we do get punished by having to run laps. Marching band also requires a lot of lung and muscle power, due to having to play for hours-on-end and having to hold up an instrument for that long. Here's something you can try: hold your arms up and see if you can last several hours like that. You'll see how hard that is.

To those who say marching band isn't competitive like football - it's very competitive. Have you ever heard of marching band competitions? Sure, you might be rolling your eyes and saying, "That's not against another team," but it IS against another team. You do realize that, even though we aren't in a *competitive* state in competitions, we DO have rivals. We are trying to out-play our rival schools and try to be on top of the competition and move on to quarter or state finals. So, don't tell me marching band isn't competitive.

To those who are just saying, despite what I just said, marching band still isn't a sport - all I can say is you are ignorant, because it takes a lot of work pulling off a show. Sure, it doesn't involve a ball, but it takes a lot of team effort and participation, and if one person messes up, everyone messes up. Go see a marching band practice and you'll see how hard and strict it is to pull it off. Just because we don't throw a ball doesn't mean it's not a sport.
