I love marching band! People have no idea that we spend ten hours a week on the field.
-Three 3 hour practices (Monday, Tuesday, Thursday)
-Football games (Friday... duh)
-Competition/7 hour band camp (Saturday)

Can anyone say skin cancer? wink

Band kids rule!

We spend Monday(2:15-4:30), Tuesday(til 2:15-6), Wed. (2:15-3:09), Thurs.((2:15-6), Fri (2:15-3:09),
Band camp lasts 8 am til 11, then 1 to 4:30, then 7-9 everyday for 2 weeks

cheereading and band are not sports

they are sheerly for entertainment

I totally agree that marching band is a sport. I would be in my school's marching band if they had one... But we don't anymore, they got rid of the program a long time ago... Most likely because money reason... cry

Ouch! o.< That's the only real set back of maraching band really. I have to say I like Marching band myself.

Yes it is a sport, and a high majority of the high schools around my area mark it as a sport.

If you disagree, actually visit any practice, it's pretty demanding both musically and physically.
glad to finally see people stand up for marching band and colorgaurd.
At my school, band is so demanding that we get a year of gym checked off for it! They don't even do that for the kids in sports. blaugh

hey! finally someone who agrees with me!
YES it is a sport. There are winners and judges, if it was just for entertainment purposes we wouldnt give a crap Most marching bands spend anywhere from 2 weeks to 2 months of band camp getting their shows together and this is before school even starts. We practice more than any sport. My band i will honestly admit sucks this year since over 3/4 our band is freshmen and people that dont know what the hell they are doing. But most bands spend like i said 2 weeks to 2 month of band camp (8am-4pm Monday through Friday) Rehersal before school starts and then Tues and Thurs 3 hour rehersals and Friday night games are considered rehersals. Then before competitions start up they spend saturday rehersing from 8am to 4pm. Anyone that doesnt consider Marching Band and the Colorguard a Sport is STUPID. And by the way incase you didnt know colorguard is considered part of the marching band when they perform with them, so they arent two different sports. Colorguard falls under marching band. However, there is winter colorguard, which is a sport in its own, and does not fall under marching band. I should know, Ive been a clarinet for 5 years and now im in Colorguard. So next time before you go to talk crap about the marching band/cologuard consider this: while everyone else is at home being lazy butts hating on us, we are outside on the pavement working our butts off to make the school look good. AND YES I JUST OWNED U WITH MORE FACTS AND A FEW OPINIONS.
wow what an active thread.
I gotta tell everyone who thinks marching band is not a sport. you are sadly mistaken. i did it for six years 4 in HS and 2 in college. We'd start in the hottest part of july or beginning of august and for 2 weeks be out in the sun and heat. We would march up hills and across the blazing parking lot sweating and breathless feeling like we where being baked. That was the first 3 days.
Then we got our instruments and began playing those and marching up the hills and across the parking lots, i played the trumpet and mellowphone(marching french horn) and those things might LOOK small but they get really heavy really fast. you get sore legs sore arms, and you feel like your chest is going to explode then you put on the 30 pound wool unifrms and the damnable helmet, together with the playning and marching you feellike you are carrying a couple hundred pounds. that's the first 2 weeks. once school starts you have a practise every day, and field trials every other night,so i guess maybe 7 times a week. our particular band did 2 show at every home game. there are at least 6 parades, and 2 competitions a year, if you are god you get up to 4 a year. so if somone doesn't belive that marching band is a sport i say try out for one..i know you 'll change your tune.
I agree with u 100 percent Awsome fourm!!Go Band!!

it is a sport! its harder then like cheerleading, and golf..

golf yes.....cheerleading tho im not so sure
im in wrestling and let me tell you it is not an easy task to do flips and handsprings all over the place.
Have many people even watched the college bands pratice. I live in Ohio and basically everyone worships the Ohio State Univeristy Football Team and Marching Band. When you attend one of the Home games and the marching band comes out of the the tunnel the crowd cheers are so loud that you would think that everyone was there for them and not the football team. And Yes I do believe that Marching band is a sport.
Look, I love the marching band. They're awesome, but they're NOT a sport. It's just them putting on a musical performance in a certain way. It is, by no means, an actual sport.

You obviously have no personal experience performing in a marching band, then. Yes, it is a musical performance; but much more goes into it than just that. Strength training, endurance, focus, and countless hours of practice go into "putting on a musical performance in a certain way". My high school, and countless others, have a pay to participate policy for SPORTS programs... guess what I had to pay to do? That's right, marching band. There is no such fee for choir or symphonic band. That performance out on the field is more than just musical, it's a very physical ordeal. If something as asinine as Frisbee Golf can be considered a sport, then surely something much more challenging and demanding such as marching band is an even better qualifier. How about YOU go practice 5 days a week for 2 months in the blistering summer heat to put on a 'musical performance', continue practicing 3-4 days a week for weekend contests where you COMPETE against other bands, and THEN tell me if it should be a sport or not.
If it wasn't for band I don't think I'd have the shoulder muscles that I do. I don't think it helps that two of my band directors are in the Army National Guard Band and whenever we get in trouble, we have to do pushups or run laps and count it like the military does. (So if we had to do, for example, five pushups, we'd really do 1 2 3. 2 2 3. 3 2 3. 4 2 3. 5 2 3 and THEN be done.)
Im in marching band....n i thinks its awesome....i play the mellophone....MOB rocks!!!(Mighty Owl Band)
