Welcome to Gaia! ::

So...since I was told that if i considered marching band a sport to post about it the the sport forum..i am. Marching Band IS A SPORT! And if you swear that its not..take a look at cheerleading. Music is involved...steps and sets are judged...the only difference is people in the band dont run around in skimpy skirts that show half of thier butts! I bet if they did...people would be more than glad to call it a sport.

This is a marching band thread. If you have come to bash people and swear that its not a sport...dont waste your time. We really dont care...
cheereading and band are not sports

they are sheerly for entertainment
i will admit i am a band greek!! but im not in the "band" im in the color gaurd
it is a sport! its harder then like cheerleading, and golf..
i wanted to be in colorguard...but i don't have any time b/c of wonderful academic competitions and b/c i have no talent whatsoever for dancing... i'm also too short... >.<
Marching band is awesome, at my school, out band does better than our football team. So does speech team. Colorguard is amazing. I have only one problem, I have to pick between Marching Band, Colorguard, Speech Team, and Theatre, AND I CAN'T PICK!!!! xP
Wtf it's not a sport stare
I totally agree that marching band is a sport. I would be in my school's marching band if they had one... But we don't anymore, they got rid of the program a long time ago... Most likely because money reason... cry
Damn straight! I belonged to the first high school marching band in Wisconsin and I loved every tuba playing minute of it.
I love marching band! People have no idea that we spend ten hours a week on the field.
-Three 3 hour practices (Monday, Tuesday, Thursday)
-Football games (Friday... duh)
-Competition/7 hour band camp (Saturday)

Can anyone say skin cancer? wink

Band kids rule!

Yeah.. Isn't it like music? I mean you don't do sporty things.. You have more like a rutin with drums and stuff... In cheerleading you do situps and and do basketosses or to chartwheels or stuff like that, I think that's more sporty.. But hey, everyone has a different view on sports! And we all agree on you can love something like a sport or whatever.. ^^

You're completely wrong. We spend hours in the heat, run laps around the field and do jumping jacks and stuff before we even pull out our instruments. Our director probably yells at us more than a coach for a sport like football or baseball. We do more than cheerleaders. They're just more flexible to be able to do backflips and cart-wheels. We have people pass out every other week from heat exhaustion. We are drilled and disciplined. If we even speak a word on the practice field we will be punished by either running a lap for standing at attention. Marching band is just like the military only with instruments instead of weapons. We go through so much work and spend so many hours each day to get our show on the field. I bet you haven't even seen a band behind the scenes. We march in pouring rain, lightning and when it's 95 degrees out. You try standing perfectly still with your feet together and your elbows angled correctly for an hour straight. Try marching backwards on your toes or rolling your feet. Just because band has 'fat people' in it, unlike cheerleaders, and because you've never seen a good band practice doesn't mean that band isn't 'sport-like'.
I understand that we don't play 'against' anyone, but we compete just like cheerleaders do. If you've gone to a cheerleader competion, you can see that they have practiced hard and done well. If you respect the arts you would notice the same with a band at a competition. If you've only seen bands at football games, you're getting the wrong perspective; football games are basically a run-through of the show like we would do at a practice. We are only truely serious when the audience is silent and all you can hear is the echoing of the snair as we march onto the field. People at competitons respect us and are silent when a band is on the field, but at football games people could give a crap. I hear them talking and I see them running to eat their food so they can come back during 3rd quarter. You won't truely understand how hard the band works until yougo to the first dayof band camp and spend four hours straight doing the basics block or Medusa.

Okay, I admitt I don't knew that about the marching bands and very good by you marching banders that you pracitese so much. I still won't change my mind about it not being a sport but I don't now if I'll call cheerleading a sport either so.. In my country we doesn't have many marching bands (seen like one) and I apologize for my non-nolege though.

Man, You took the words right out of my mouth, I'm not even going to get started about color guard.
i just wanted to say this since a lot of people connect marching band with football. my school has like an awesome marching band, and we do big competitions and stuff, but we don't even have a football team! something about it costs too much or something, so we have to have our homeshow at bellingham high.
