Personally I think marching band is a sport- it's incredibly physically and mentally challenging because you have to be able to march a routine and play your instrument at the same time usually memorized. If you play a heavy instrument like i do (i play tuba) it is even more physically challenging just because of the weight, but everyone is entitled to their opinions.

Yes. I am in my High School Marching Band (Go Lions!) and we are having band camp these two weeks and I used to play High School Football and Marching Band practice is worse than football practice.

while marching band may be a physically demanding activity it has zero qualities of being a sport. there is no score or defense. so i dont see how it could be a sport

um, we get scored when we compete.

there are winners and losers. if we win, we are ecstatic. we loose, we are just as disappointed as in any other sport.

I am a part of a marching band that competes statewide and we have won first place in competitions against 40 other state level marching bands. we work our asses off, i know FOR A FACT that we work harder than the football team at our school.list every quality it takes for an activity to be considered a "sport" and i will tell you why marching band qualifies.

the people who say marching band is not a sport have no idea what they are talking about. I have been at school for the past three weeks EVERY DAY FOR EIGHT HOURS IN THE SUN practicing for marching band. f**k you.

I think marching band is a sport. Im in marching band..we have not 2 a days but 3 a days! We comps. and we have conditioning...How is that different that soccer or football? We are just a active!

heck yeah it is. i have practice 5 days a week from 7.30 to 4.15. we run laps, push ups, sit ups, conditioning, strechting....we are at every football game and compitition. but no one likes to call it a sport. =[

you're right. it is a sport and we work for so long in the heat. we are more involved than other sports and have more of a rigorous schedule. we aren't just walking on the field looking pretty. we are trying to prove we are number one.

marching band iz not a fuckin sport all u do is play a dam instrument. it iz not as hard as learning to play basketball or throwing a football 60 yards and running through 200+ pound men HA! rofl

try memorizing 92 sets of work, playing an instrument or twirling a flag, while trying to dodge over members, counting, playing music, staying on step, and making sure that you get to your spot in time when its 102 degrees outside m'kay?

I'm siding with you on this one.

Not only that there is no doubt on my mind that all Marching Bands have rigorious routines, drills, music, etc. Some go to the point where you must do push-ups, sit ups, etc warm ups into a specific tempo. There is also dedication. Many start as early as the beginning of July and work their way through to the summer. Most sesions during that time consume between 6-9 hours.

Most drills are to balence the instrament (usually). Example, if you play something like a tube, the steps aren't that big and you have to worry about carrying roughly 25lb on a shoulder and remembering to be careful with it. (Some are roughly $4000, or more) If you play a light instrament, like flute, your sets have a tendency to be more on the athletic side. Jazz running is pretty common among flutes. (FYI Jazz Running is taking a huge step on the toes usually while still mantaing little movment in the upper body, keeping shoulders parellel to the front sidelines, and keeping the sound consistant, and all of that while usually keeping in tempos as quick as 176~208+) Though there are times when you really do see someone with a Barry Sax or a similar heavy instrament Jazz Run, but not that common.

Yes we do have compitions, and we are scored by a pannel of judges. Some even try to walk on the field. Though they do their best to get out of your way. 9_9 (Though that rarely happens) You'll be surprised, there ARE people that have gone to football games to only see half-time shows. It's amusing.

Understand there drills that we need to memorize, music to be memorize (roughly 7-10 minutes worth), a lot of skill to keep center of gravity and balence in check, etc. I'd also like to add not all of the music is exactly cake walk to memorize either. Peices like Ride by Samuel Hazo really extend the flutes higher octaves. (Beleive me it's a little challenging to try to read a note like almost 4-6 lines above treble cleft.)

I've emphasized about enough, but my last small bit is that all that I said, that's my opinion and I'm backing it up. Though if anyone disagrees I'm compleatly fine with that. Everyone has a right to their own opinion, but there are some high schools that really count it as a sport and do give sport credits to those who participate.

I'm not in a marching band, but I have a couple friends who are in one. They practice for hours. They train for hours. Though it seems sorta obscure, Marching Bands is a sport of sorts, i guess. I'm aware that the band gets scored at the end. Getting a bad reaction from the audeince, and/or getting a low score would be as dissapointing as losing a football match. In some places, there are even competitions.

I can't really tell how physically demanding it is, since I've never been part of one. But literally saying it's not a sport seems sorta insulting to the many people who memorize hundreds of drills, training every day.

It's borderline. It's certainly physical and challenging on the body (especially down here in Texas), but it's just not a sport in most areas. When it becomes competitive, I think it's a sport. Anyone who watches D.C.I. should know, though drum corps aren't technically marching bands.
