oki im in a school band...
I think it counts as a sport...you people think so too??

No band defiantly isn't a sport, it's music, a form of art or recreation. It's not physical enough and not goal orientated as sports are (unless you count being able to play a song). The fact that you are generally just sitting there playing an instrument (unless you're in a marching band) proves it's not a sport as there is no real physical activity involved.

Sport is defined as an organized, skillful physical activity where people compete to determine skill finishing with a winning and a losing side which is generally determined by a team scoring goals or crossing a line first or something of the sort.

I'm training to become a personal trainer so I have to be able to recommend exercises to do with specific sports and band is defiantly not one that needs it. To be a sport a combination of the following (if not all) must be present: fitness level, agility, power, strength, muscular endurance, cardiovascular endurance, etc. The only thing you might actually require in band is a high VO2 Max if you're playing a wind instrument.
yes, of course! ^.^
sorry but no, I can't see band being a sport, it just doesn't seem active.

If you're n Marching Band, absolutely. Requires alot of cardio work out, focus, and maintaining a healthy body as well as discipline. Check out some groups. Blue Devils, Phantom Regiment, Santa Clara Vanguard and many more. Its DCI (Drum Corps International).
I would consider it a sport because of the ability required for it. Along with competing. However, in school it counts as a PE credit because of amount of physical work it involves. Lots of running, and working out. Holding instruments, and playing while running and marching around the field for a 7-11 minute show.

Definition: 1.) Physical activity that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often engaged in competitively.
2.) An athletic activity requiring skill or physical prowess and often of a competitive nature

Marching Band definitely falls under that, so yes. It is a sport. However, just regular band, not so much.

IF ITS MARCHING BAND THEN YES IT IS! IT IS DEFINATELY A SPORT! Our band director warms us up and teaches us like Drum Corps. We had two students come back to day to camp and they even want us to be like the corps. The excercises and amount of time we spend outside and everything is definately longer than all the groups on our campus. We run more, we work harder and everything than our own football team which...is wow (not in a good way wow). Haha..but it is definately a sport. You can get injuries and everything. I found out today that this kid who was marching in one of those corps broke his leg. Last year i went to a percussion contest and a girl broke her nose cuz he rolled back on her heels and her quads came up and hit her. Looked very painful...sorry I just kept talking...
So you're agreeing with me? Haha most people that quote me bring up an argument.. xD So im assuming you are agreeing smile

Marching band should be considered a sport but it's not. >.<

I did Marching band for four years, concert band for four years and Percussion Ensemble for two. The only one that doesn't require alot of moving is the concert band.

In Marching band competions you have fifteen minutes to get set up on the field, perform a show, and get off as fast as you can.

Fifteen minutes sounds like a long time but it's not when you have a 12 or 13 minute long show. Set up and broke down are counted in that 15 minute window and if everyone and every piece of equipment is not off that field in 15, you get penalties which can kill your score and your placing.

The other thing to look at is Band Camp. Kids come into a camp or go to their school usually two to three weeks before school actually starts and spend 8 to 12 depending on the program outside in the heat sweating worse then pigs to the slaughter carrying instruments that way anywhere from 2 to 5 pounds. They don't way much but they do get heavy after a few hours.

And if any of you have after lifted a seven and half octave Marimba you know what I mean. I was the only girl in our band that could lift our Marimba and it must have been sixty or seventy pounds by itself not to mention the symbols and extra 'toys' as we call them on it which can easily added annother 10 or 15 lbs.

The judges are looking at EVERYTHING!!!! They look for everyone being in step, being in the exact spot that you're supposed to be in for drill, they watch the drumline to be sure they are all using the same sticking and marching the same, they watch the pit to make sure they are watching each other, identical stick height, identical volume from everyone, everyone has to be watching the drum major, the color guard has two move between band members while spinning a flag so close to their bodies that one wrong move either way someone is getting hit AND music has to be memorized it has to be as close to perfect as possible, same with the drill.

My freshman year we had a show that we were never below 180 beats per minute on any one song. The highest we ever went was 200 something or another, that is really fast, for those of you who are not music savvy find a metronome and set it for a tempo of 200...not easy.

If anyone has ever done Percussion Ensemble then you know it's even harder to stay within your time limit. There is still equipment to be moved, a floor mat that was usually a billboard sign at some point. Percussion competitions are usually conducted in gyms in schools which means that getting in and out in a timely matter is beyond difficult because of the lack of open space and percussion instruments are not light. I was the Drumline and Pit Section Leader my Senior of highschool, it wasn't uncommon for someone to pass out because they were so worn and so sore from the physical demand.

If you have never participated in Marching Band or have never known someone who was, don't say it can't be considered a sport until you actual check it out.

Marching band is the most physically and mentally demanding sport there is.
Goodie! ^_^ Haha, oh! I used to be. I marched Academy first, and then Cadets and Phantom
