I'd say its just the whole experience really. No one part terrifies me as much as the way the movie gives this feel that it could happen. I don't wanna use the word 'realistic' but...yeah.

I've seen it. I think The Exorcism of Emily Rose is the scariest out of all the exorcism movies. I watched it once, and that was it for me. lol eek It's based on a true story which makes it even scarier. I haven't seen The Last Exorcism (2010).

Everyone's saying The Exorcism Of Emily Rose was scarier then the Exorcist. :p

A crime, if you ask me. Emily Rose is a quick buck movie made for teenagers. The Exorcist, along with everything it implies thematically, is the kind of movie that's meant to linger in your mind. All anyone remembers is the vomit and the head-spinning, but there's a lot more going on in that movie, and it's a shame so much of it goes over peoples' heads these days.

The Exorcism of Emily Rose wasn't so cheaply done, it had a lot of story to it. Jennifer Carpenter really deserved an award for her performance. The horror wasn't so "in your face" like The Exorcist, it was subtle yet chilling. I really liked the courtroom trial setting, it was like watching a supernatural episode of Law and Order. You feel like you're also on jury duty in the courtroom. They showed how the possession/illness affected Emily, her social life and her family. It's interesting how Emily wasn't responding to medication and she could speak in languages she never learned, it stirs up questions: was she really mentally ill, or possessed? Did she die of negligent manslaughter or possession? I really think this movie brings people closer to the possibility of the supernatural and God.

I didn't hate it, but it just seemed a little flat to me. Regardless, The Exorcist is a work of art. Emily Rose is, at best, good, but not great.

A better film based on the Anneliese Michel story is one called Requiem. Not exactly a horror film, but closer to the real thing.

Oh, I've never heard about It. If It requires exorcisms I cant see stuff like that. :S

I think this generations idea of scary has been fed by the gist of horror films of the past decade which rely on cheap thrills rather than setting a lingering mood. I found The Exorcism to be completely unsettling. The movie made me feel genuinely ill. The scene where she's violently masturbating with a crucifix surpasses just about any torture moment of films of late.
I guess it could be argued that recent horror films set an unsettling mood as well, but that's more dependent on your anticipation of sudden action and noises then subtle build up of tension.

I'm pretty sure it's called The Exorcist. Not The Exorcism. You'd think a movie this iconic wouldn't get its title mixed up. sweatdrop

She was not masturbating herself, she was hurting herself. I saw half of the movie, and I thought It was scary.

lol In the 70's, when it came out, apparently it was really scary! It was the scariest movie of all time. People fainted, ran out of the theaters screaming, crying, and vomiting. Back then there wasn't a movie as scary as The Exorcist. I think the scariest scenes were when the priest was praying over her and she was spazzing out and throwing up green goo, and when she crawled down the stairs backwards. 3nodding

SHUTUP. Im going to get nightmares xp rofl
