I wasn't raised Catholic either, but when I watched the movie for the very first time (only a couple years ago) it was with a very good friend who had been brought up in a (somewhat) Catholic household, and that you're taught to be afraid of demons and Satan and such.
I think a lot of people today won't find it that scary because modern-day horror films (well most modern films) tend to be way more in-your-face and use only the slickest effects possible.
