By Keith McCord
SALT LAKE CITY -- Feb. 7 is Super Bowl Sunday. It's the NFL's biggest day, and one of the biggest socializing days of the year as well. Super Bowl parties go on everywhere, and for some people watching the game isn't the best part: it's watching the commercials during the timeouts.
30-second ads on CBS selling for between $2.5 million and $2.8 million. Last year, averaged $3 million on NBC. - TNS Media IntelligenceAt nearly $3 million a pop, companies wait for Super Bowl Sunday to roll out their newest and most creative commercials. With an estimated TV audience of 180 million people, why not?
Each year, the day after the Super Bowl, the employees at Salt Lake's Richter7 advertising agency get together for their so-called "Ad Bowl." They replay the commercials and vote on the best and worst. They've been doing this for 15 years now.

All bets are on as to who will win this year's Super Bowl. Will it be the Colts or the Saints? If you're looking to hedge your bets, you could take a hint from orangutans. "People are so much looking forward to seeing the commercials as they are the game. They're totally engaged in it. You've got a great opportunity to shine or bust," says Tal Harry, partner at Richter7.
TOP 5 SUPER BOWL ADVERTISERS (1990-2009)
Rank Advertiser # of Years With Ads In Game Ad Spend (millions)
1 Anheuser-Busch 20 $311.8
2 PepsiCo 20 $254.2
3 General Motors 15 $80.5
4 Walt Disney 10 $71.6
5 Time Warner 12 $64.8
Top 5 Total $783.0
Many of the companies buying ads this year will take the humorous approach for their $3 million. Beverage ads, auto ads, employment ads, they'll all be there again; but the folks at Richter7 are expecting some other twists this Sunday.
"I think the thing I'm looking more forward to is seeing how companies are integrating their social media," says Teri Gibson, account supervisor at Richter7.
Many are expected to use social media by tying their message to their websites, YouTube, Facebook and Twitter.
"You can see the spot then go to a Facebook page, sign up and be a fan and win something," Harry explains.
"Coke is going to announce that for every Facebook fan, they will donate a dollar to the Boys and Girls Club," Gibson says. "I'm interested in seeing more of how that is going to play out."

As Deuce McAllister sauntered into a lounge inside the stadium that will host Sunday's Super Bowl, Saints running back Pierre Thomas caught sight of him and shouted "Doooooose!"Other companies, like Doritos and Budweiser, are letting the public vote on their websites to decide which of their ads will actually air during the broadcast.
Then there's the buzz about the anti-abortion ad featuring Florida Gators quarterback Tim Tebow. Is the Super Bowl the right forum for this type of message? These ad experts say yes.
"This isn't the first year we've seen advocacy issue ads, but this is probably the most polarizing," Harry says.
"It's a great avenue for these organizations to get their messages out. On the flip side, it will bring a lot more controversy, as everyone differs in their opinions," Gibson says.
In the future, Richter7 says we can expect to see more issue-oriented types of spots on major programs, especially sporting events like the Super Bowl and the Olympics

Staffers from The Herald News in Fall River, Mass., got in the Super Bowl spirit by holding a "best dip" contest in the newsroom. Thirteen people submitted dips, and their co-workers, armed with plenty of potato chips, Tostitos, crackers and fruit, tested them and voted on the best one. First place went to Executive Advertising Administrative Assistant Andrea Griffin, who made a Buffalo Chicken Dip. Second place, a tie, went to Mexican Dip and Crabby Devil Dip. Third place, also a tie, went to Lime and Ginger-spiked Fruit Dip and a Mexican Pie Dip. We've listed all 13 of the recipes here. Enjoy!

Bake 20 min. or until mixture is heated through; stir. Garnish as desired. Serve with crackers or vegetables.

1 16-oz. container of Pace Picante sauce
Mix together. Serve with Doritos or tortilla chips.
Lynne Sullivan’s Sour Cream and Vanilla Dip
1 16-oz. container of sour cream
1 8-oz. package cream cheese
1 1-lb. box of confectioner’s sugar
1 tsp. vanilla
Beat cream cheese in electric mixer until fluffly. Add sour cream and beat on medium. Add confectioner’s sugar and vanilla and beat slowly until mostly incorporated, then turn mixer to high to beat until smooth. Serve chilled with fruit, cinnamon pita chips, etc.
Will Richmond’s Avocado with Roasted Garlic
2 avocados
½ red onion
1 garlic clove
1 tbspn prepared roasted garlic
1 jalapeño deseeded
½ lime
Salt and pepper
In a food processor combine onion, garlic clove, roasted garlic and jalapeno. Grind to a fine consistency.
In a bowl add lime juice, contents of avocados and onion/garlic mixture and mix a fork, smashing the avocado to desired consistency. Add salt and pepper to taste.
Helen Costa’s Mexican Pie
1 can chili (no beans)
1 8 oz. can sliced black olives
1 can chopped green chilies
1 8 oz. cream cheese (at room temp.)
1 large onion chopped
1 8 oz. jar of Taco Sauce (mild) although hot can be used and I use the hot.
1 pkg. shredded Pepper Jack cheese
1 pkg. shredded white cheddar cheese
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
Spread cream cheese on the bottom of the pan. (I use a glass Pyrex dish.)
In a bowl, mix chopped onion, chili, back olives and green chilies. Spread over the cream cheese. Sprinkle the Pepper Jack cheese and the white cheddar cheese over the top. (You don’t have to use all the cheese if you don’t need to; just enough to cover the surface.) Top it off with the jar of taco sauce and spread over entire top to cover the cheese. Bake uncovered in the preheated 350 degree oven for 1/2 hour and enjoy with Tostitos.
Aaron Correia’s Sweet Relish Dip
1 jar of Harry & David Sweet Pepper Relish
1 package of Philadelphia cream cheese
Mix both in a large bowl with a rubber mixing spoon until thoroughly mixed. Scoop into a serving dish. Serve with veggies, chips or crackers.
Jessica Braley’s Triple-cheese Chili Taco Dip
1 can of Hormel Hot Chili with meat/beans
2 cans of Hormel Vegetarian Chili
1 can of refried beans
1 jar of salsa
1 package of shredded Mexican cheese
1 package of shredded Sharp cheddar or mozzarella blend cheese
1 package of cream cheese (softened)
1 sleeve of crushed Ritz crackers
Diced red onion
16 oz. container of sour cream
1 or 2 packages of taco seasoning
Can of sliced olives (optional)
Guacamole (optional)
In a large mixing bowl, mix the cans of chili, ½ of your shredded cheese and the cream cheese until well mixed. In another bowl, mix the taco seasoning with an entire container of sour cream to your taste. Layer most of the refried beans, the Ritz crackers, the chili-cheese mixture and most of your remaining shredded cheese (save a little for garnish), then heat that concotion for 2-3 minutes in the microwave or until bubbling. When slightly cooled, top with dollops of the sour cream mixture and salsa. Garnish with crushed Ritz, shredded cheese and onions. You can also garnish with olive and guacamole if you’d like. Or even put dollops of refried beans on top. This will make much, much more than you can eat in one sitting.
Dana Laverty’s Super Garlicky Guacamole
8 avocados
15 cherry or grape tomatoes (chopped, with seeds removed)
6 garlic cloves, minced
Juice from a quarter of a lime
Few shakes of Tabasco green jalapeno pepper sauce
Pinch of salt
Cut the avocados in half, lengthwise, and scoop out into a large bowl. Mash with a fork until you get desired consistency. (I like mine with lots of lumps, so I don’t mash too much.) Mix in the tomatoes, garlic, lime juice and salt. Add Tabasco to taste. Enjoy!
A few notes:
Use fresh garlic. Avoid any cloves that have sprouted, as they tend to be very bitter and strong.
To keep the guacamole from turning brown, press a layer of plastic wrap against the top of the guacamole so that it touches all across the surface. This helps keep air — which turns the guacamole brown — away from the dip.
Wendy Alves’ Chourico Dip
1 tsp butter
1 lb. chourico (ground)
1 8 oz pkg cream cheese
1/4 cup sour cream
Chopped scalions (decoration)
Melt butter in frying pan on low heat. Simmer chourico untill fully cooked. Add cream cheese and stir until melted. Add sour cream. Pour into desired dish and garnish with scalions. Good served with crackers or chips.

For many, the Super Bowl is really about food, snacks, munchies, call them what you will Super Bowl Food is as important as the Super Bowl.
This year Super Bowl sandwiches could be on your menu, your meal ticket for satisfying your guests while they watch Colts and the Saints go head-to-head. The reason sandwiches for Super Bowl 44? Well, a general rule of thumb is to serve food that is unique to the cities that are vying for the Super Bowl. With the New Orleans Saints that is easy - the creole cuisine from Louisiana is offers an amazing array of food choices for the Super Bowl - the most iconic being the Po Boy sandwich.
The Po Boy sandwich is a type of submarine sandwich with French bread - a bread unique to the humid New Orleans with a crunchy crust and light airy center.
The Indianapolis Colts are a different story - sorry Hoosiers - but cuisine is not your forte with the exception of the Pork Tenderloin sandwich. Apparently, Indiana is the birthplace of the beloved breaded pork tenderloin sandwich. So popular is the sandwich that it became the subject of an adoring 1998 documentary.
Watch the video to see how to make these Super Bowl sandwiches, So for Super Bowl 44 let game be the Po Boy Sandwich vs. the Pork Tenderloin Sandwich.
If you like neither, there are lots of other food options for the Super Bowl.
