What do you guys think about sex scenes in movies? Personally I really don't like them, they make me feel uncomfortable - I'm trying to watch a story, not a porno! I think they're gratuitous and don't add anything of value to the film. What are they supposed to show me? That these two characters love each other? I think their other actions make that plainly obvious. I watched 300 with my husband last night and the sex scene in that really put me off, and I remember there being a super explicit one in one of Zack Snyder's other movies, Watchmen. And then there's the one in The Matrix Reloaded, it's so dumb! Those two characters are being lovey-dovey all the time, we really don't need to see them having sex to see that they love each other!

Here's something related. It's a joke but it's probably quite accurate to what it's like when a family is watching a movie and something like this pops up!
I think it is filler pretty much. Plus I think directors now a days are trying to see how far they can push the boundries of how far they can go.

I do not like them, they also make me feel uncomfortable when i'm watching it with others like classmates (it happend once in the university's library) or i'm watching it with my mom or a young sibling.

Unless there's some significance to the plot in that scene, I don't care for them. If there's no significance, they usually just feel like pointless fillers or desperate attempts to keep viewers interested.

I only tolerate (Tolerate is the key word) sex scenes if, and ONLY if they are crucial to the plot of the story and the development of character.

Otherwise, I despise them. I realize that they put romance in the film to attract the female audience (for the most part), but that makes me even more upset, because that means they think all women are easily manipulate-able creatures who will flock to any film as long as "kissy-kissy feely-feely" is a possibility.

Even romance in general is usually done poorly. The woman (usually) has no real character, and is only there to advance the main character. And the main character is content and happy with his life until the woman comes in and either disrupts everything, or is the sole catalyst for whatever heroism he's responsible for.

I can name only three instances where romance was done well, even to the point that the pointless sex scene was fine by me:

#1: The Matrix movies. Trinity is an awesome female lead, with enough potential for a stand-alone role.

#2: Farscape. Aeryn Sun and John Crichton's relationship. Every female lead in the series was excellent, but Aeryn's story and development over time was utter genius.

#3: Smallville. Erica Durance as Lois Lane. She wasn't the damsel in distress, was there for Clark when he needed a shoulder to lean on, but would also give him a good kick if he needed one. In many ways, she was his equal, standing right next to him, not behind him like most female leads tend to do.
It is ok for me as long the scene feels not forced into the movie for the sake of having it in it.
I only hate them when I'm watching a movie with my family...or on like a first date. I went on a date with this dude one time and a sex scene came on and I was all like shiiiiit because he started trying to cop a feel.

I find the sex scenes ruin the movie for me
Personally it really doesn't bother me. It's just like whatever.

Celestial Dog

always make me crazy uncomfortable. I understand they do it to appeal to certain demographics but god it's never necessary and never has anything to do with the plot.

even in tv shows.
the earlier eps of game of thrones were killing me with that s**t.
supernatural did it a lot too back when I kept up with that show. my friend and I would just make fun of it because they'd be UNCOMFORTABLY LONG sex scenes.

like if you really want the story to include two characters banging, just do something so it's clearly implied but don't show us anything jfc.

Not at all. I cannot stand them, rather, the lewdness. Toying around with certain wording and leaving it to implication is a saner practice, in my honest opinion. It detracts from the movie, more often than not. It feels...inadequate, regardless of age. Seems to me like a cheap ploy to garner more audience seats. Don't really like them, no.

Transcendent Apparition

I hate sex scenes in movies! There's no need, half the time. The only one I can even tolerate is the one in the Terminator, and it's only because it's important to the storyline.
It adds to the emotion

It definitely depends on the context. If it's just filler then I feel like the writers and director are insulting me by thinking they have to go to the most basic level to keep my attention. If their plot and script was top notch they wouldn't need it.

If however it's used to deepen a character, a situation, and adds immeasurably where its absence would be sorely missed then I am fine with it.

I also hate gratuitous nudity if it's only for the sake ticking off a list. If it's part of the character to walk around nude or then by all means but if it's only to titillate the audience, then no, have more respect for the characters, the script and the actors involved.

Much worse when with a younger sibling. So freaking awkward.
