Welcome to Gaia! ::

I enjoy the horror genre but only when there is an original story with great acting and great directing. I enjoy movies that make you think and play with your mind.

I absolutely hate realistic gore in film. I find it to be a total cop out and is used when the story just sucks. I can't stand torture porn movies (Saw sequels, Hostel, Human Centipede).

But I am extremely happy when I see a really intense and creative horror film. Here are some of my favorites.

Antichrist
Bug
Sinister
Onibaba

The Descent

Okay I gotta bring this up...
Sinister did a lot of things wrong but it did one thing masterfully... The super 8 film is shot so well... Perfectly.. Because its completely quiet, all you hear is the rattle of the projector. You are witnessing these horrible acts of murder in complete silence.. Normally movies when your listening really close like in these scenes it would.. have... a..... JUMPSCARE ERMAHGERD!!!!

But no... It handles it perfectly... Building such an atmosphere that al you can do is sit there and watch. Being completely unsettled.. I love those scenes... Though the rest of the movie is a bit meh..

Did you know that my brain is made of cake with a nice vanilla pudding in the middle. I like pudding! OK bye!
Professor Giggles
I think the most interesting are the ones that have the least explanation (Halloween, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, The Strangers).

It's funny how many horror films these days need to explain everything, or give every monster or ghost or killer some complicated backstory. While they can occasionally be used to chilling effect, I find that these things are more frightening the more unknown they are.

Yeah I agree, but as you said, the direction and shots were just amazing!

You have one hell of a point..
I always say almost the same thing. The most terrifying thing out there is not knowing.. the unknown, the absolute lack of knowing what your facing!

(Sorry for the wait!)

I have a love-hate relationship with horror movies. When I'm watching them, I'm all pansy and hiding behind my knees at the jump scares(I always flinch whether I'm scared or not), but afterward I realize how good they were. Usually this leads to me watching them again.
Just like what's been discussed, I'm more scared of factors that are left unknown. So ones like Case 39, House at the End of the Street, The Caller, The Skeleton Key, and Insidious became lack luster during about the last quarter of the movie because they tell you everything.

No I haven't yet, but its on my list. smile Its kind of my own fault because I thought people were just talking about the American remake of Shutter. So when everyone was all hyped I shrugged it off.

It is (In my opinion) a rather damn fine movie! Mainly because the main point of the movie (Which I will not spoil for you) is not told to you! You have to make your own call!

I actively avoid horror films/books/games. Been scared and upset
too many times in my life to consider it a form of entertainment.
