We will run out of oil soon and then we have to change. Having said that, I heard this from a certified expert (a college professor who has dedicated his career to this very subject), who said that we should have run out around 2004~2005, so his estimates may be off. As for alternative fuels, solar is best because it shouldn't run out until the sun explodes and destroys the Earth, at which point fuel wouldn't be the worst problem. In the meantme, I like methanol, it's a waste product that already exists as a pollutant in garbage dumps, so whatever damage it could do, it's kinda already doing anyway, at least we might be able to get some good out of it.
I hate to see animals such as birds (seaguls and penguins) be choked and killed by the horrible oil spills that are spilled. Animals were put here for a reason so dont go and kill them! I know oil spills are an accident, but please try to be more careful. . . cry

Part of the problem is that the electric car was killed in 2001 :-[ I think all people should watch Who Killed The Electric Car?, maybe the people can try to get the EVs back to the production line and into people's hands.

I loved that movie!

With in 100 years, we will not have any crude oil left to supply the population. We need to get back into figuring out more hybrid cars, more efficient electric cars, and also possibly a substitute for the oil. We do take it for granted and years ago hit the peak production for millions of barrels and will more than likely will begin to decline in the next decade or so.

Right now I am noticing that I will need proof for this. I heard this all in a documentary in school but I do not remember the name of it. I found a website where someone has posted some information., But yea. I am for having a new resource to replace oil!

It doesn't matter if they created a car that runs on air. Gasoline for cars only accounts for 12% of our dependence on oil.
You got that right!!!

Yes, but at least we wouldn't be using that 12% on cars. Also with research into new ways to power cars we will find new ways that could power everything else :-]
I think the pollution it causes and how much we depend on oil is just horrible! Hopefully someone will find an eco-friendly alternative before we destroy earth...

Eventually Americans will be weaned off of their petrol. It is a feasible and reasonable goal if people realize that we can have a cheaper fuel made from the excess that our own farmers produce. ( Seriously, there's a lot of energy in green matter that has been proven to run cars. Modern diesel engines, modified to take this bio-fuel or not, run pretty cleanly.)

Realistically, I don't think that America will ever be free of its oil vice in my lifetime. Perhaps in my hypothetical grand child's, but not mine. What we can do is plant the seed for the creation of vehicles and products that aren't made with the black oil, and instead made with green oil.

So all you chemists and industrial engineers and designers get cracking! I'm rooting for you to help solve this issue and get america thinking in the 'green' direction!

We could use tin cans, but then the number would be very high and look scary gonk

An electric car won't help the environment if you have to charge it from your home that is powered by a natural gas/coal/petro. power plant neutral That and how to properly recycle the batteries in those electrics matter as well.

I would hope using hydrogen would work. It's abundant, doesn't pollute but sadly isn't that efficient yet (last time I checked anyway).

Hydrogen=Hindenburg. As for the electric car use Solar Light and Heat to charge one.

Hydrogen fuel cells run on the bonding energy not combustion.

I do agree solar energy could be used to charge the battery, however I'm not sure if there are panels big enough to fully charge the battery.
