Food for thought. Technology IS getting better, but will it be getting better fast enough?

Beginner Warrior

Those facts in the poster are bogus, but it's still something to think about.

If everyone stayed home, grew veggies and lived a poor, hand-to-mouth existence, the planet would probably be cleaner, but life would be worse. A homeless person might have less of a carbon footprint than someone that smokes, tokes and drives a car every day, but not many environmentalists choose to be poor hobos.
The internet is not killing our planet we the humans are. Right now I am more concerned about getting affordable alternative fuel cars.
Well it kind of is. Going on the internet is using energy. But we can save the earth and still use the internet! biggrin

I get your point made in your second statement, because a poor hobos existence is certainly not alternative to be considering (although, a Hippie-style commune existence would be a more accurate portrayal of a communitarian effort to live like poor hobos without being poor hobos; Maybe even as a counterargument to your second claim, now that I think about it)...

... But what I take issue with is the assumption you made about the poster in your first point stare

First off, the poster cites all its sources, at the bottom, for where it got its information and, after perusing those said sources, I have little doubt that the information is incorrect. So, I'm curious as to how you came to your conclusions about the facts being bogus... Do you have sources that say otherwise? Journal Articles? News reports? Information from prominent scientists or environmental groups? Please, enlighten us, as the New Age-y types typically say rolleyes

Honestly, I suspect you said what you said out of hasty generalization of having skimmed the poster versus actually going through its cited sources at the bottom, which means you've actually contributed to misinformation on the Internet which is, by and large, one of the biggest contributors to environmental degradation neutral

... I mean, next to Ayn Rand, Ann Coulter, and the Earth-hating folks of Samizdata... Misinformation is the greatest threat to the Environment gonk
I hope we figure something out :- My prof. told us in class that servers alone account for 5% of the total annual US energy consumption o__o Servers ALONE! Not even counting all personal computers, mainframes, and cell phones... sad Poor Earth.

~~{{It's true that the INTERNET is producing an increasing amount of Carbon Emmissions!!}}~~ ....Depending on how fast you read that, you likely emitted between 100 - 150 milligrams of CO2. It’s estimated that for every second you are online roughly 20 milligrams of CO2 is released into our atmosphere.//
<>

Currently, internet data centers around the world emit a total of over 170 Mt of Carbon Dioxide, which is nearly 1% of the World’s total CO2 emissions, nearly half the total for the IT industry (2%) and nearing the quantity of emissions produced by other major industries such as the airline industry. While plenty of data centers are opting to offset their emissions by buying carbon credits, this does little to actually help reduce carbon emissions and implement green-technologies. The IT and online industry urgently need to address data center energy efficiency, expanding clean technologies such as smart buildings, smart grids, virtualization, and advanced networks. These technologies need to meet the significant increase of data center capacity and demand, as well as meet the service needs of the growing online marketplace.

I WORK FOR MYECOSERVER, promoting the SOLAR POWERED INTERNET server Green Data Center in sunny southern California!

Many organizations are implementing small incremental changes to help lower CO2 emission costs without demanding large capital investments and without disruption to their business structures. We here at MyEco have recognized that our part in reducing worldwide carbon emissions is a great opportunity to allow the continuation of internet business to create eco-friendly online infrastructures without adding to the Carbon Footprint.

MyEcoServer is dedicated to reducing the carbon footprint of the internet and is designed for online businesses and colleges to assimilate easily into a modern and clean internet cyber-Infrastructure. By hosting your website with MyEcoServer, you are guaranteed a part of this shifting world-consciousness, knowing that your website is powered solely by the Sun and that you have done more than just purchase ‘credits’ which can not replace the actual energy spent. It means a lot for us here at MyEco to announce that we use rain-water-cooling systems to keep our server’s cool, and that our Green-facility was built with the Earth in mind from the ground-up, including insulating walls built 12 inches thick made from recycled materials. And we’ve tried to think of everything to reduce emissions costs, such as using energy efficient IBM servers and LED lighting, all of this reducing our National Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) rate to 1/3 that of typical data centers. Other less-efficient data centers, such as large 200,000 square foot data centers draw up to 40 megawatts of coal energy, which is enough to power over 40,000 homes.

Join the solar-community here at MyEco and feel good about getting hits on your solar-powered website! Let your friends and co-workers know the importance of reducing global carbon emissions, and shed light on the opportunity for them to power their websites off the coal grid and onto the Green-Grid!

Please Switch to MYECOSERVER if you have/ know of someone who has a Website! At basically the Same Cost, with ZERO CARBON emissions from the servers and the Green Building; CARBON FREE, THE WAY WEBHOSTING SHOULD BE!

The internet is connecting the whole world, I can´t see how it can be bad at all.
No matter how much concern you put into it, the world won´t change, it was made to end some day.
There is no way to save it, so you might as well enjoy it right now. Don´t believe the PETA commercials, it is too late. Just hope we´re not around when that happens.... xd
