The Guide to Cosplay V.1

-Introduction-

Ever wanted to cosplay, but you didn’t want to buy a wig? Or maybe you wanted to crossplay, but didn’t know how to bind? Well, this thread will help you start cosplaying or just give you ideas for future cosplays!

I am, by no means, a cosplayer who is ungoddly and proffessional (like there are any proffessional cosplayers), but just a cosplayer who was bored and decided that it’d be a nice change for a guide to be built to help cosplayers.

Because I am not a guru of anime, manga, video games, lolita, visual kei, or any of that, if you feel like I left something out or if I should edit something, please do speak up! :]

Updates:
- November 29, 2009: Guide is open to the public. Hope it helps! [This guide was actually in the works since summer of 2009, but I just haven't been able to post it until now. D;]
-June 13, 2010: LOL. I forgot I made this guide. 8'D Will revive.

What is Cosplay?

Cosplay is literal for costume play. It’s when you dress yourself up in a costume of your favorite character or person. Cosplaying a hobby. You don’t necissarily have to make your own costume in order to cosplay. In fact, many people do buy their costumes from others, so don’t worry if you can’t sew or you’re not too good at it yet.

Cosplaying isn’t only for Japanese anime or video games! Cosplaying also means you can dress up as many other things. American cartoons, TV shows, book characters, J-Rock singers and bands, and even in lolita and fetish apparel. So don’t limit yourself to the small frame of Japanese animation. People even dress up as their original characters or characters from web comics! Your possibilites are literally endless.

Alright, so that’s Cosplay... then what’s Crossplay?

Crossplay is just like cosplay, only you’re crossdressing. Crossplay is a play on words of Cosplay: crossdress and play. If you’re a female, this means you dress up as your favorite male character. If you’re male, this means you dress up as your favorite female character. It’s really as simple as that.

Who should I cosplay?

Well, I’m not really the one to tell you who you should or shouldn’t cosplay, but take these points into consideration!

Point 1: Do I like this character or character design? This should be the easiest question to answer. Sometimes you may be conflicted, but weigh the pros and cons first before jumping the gun.

Point 2: Will you do justice to this character or their character design? Well, let’s be honest. Many of us don’t have a character’s body type. This DOES NOT mean that if you’re larger than most, you can’t cosplay a character. It does mean, though, that you will have to make some adjustments. For example, if you’re a bigger girl (or guy) and you want to cosplay Sailor Moon, you should lengthen your skirt. Many times, these small but crucial changes to your costume will make people say “Hey, how awesome is that costume?” rather than “Oh em gee, can you believe they wore THAT?”. Think about it.

Point 3: Am I ready to cosplay this character? Cosplaying is a very, very, very expensive hobby. If you’re sewing, you’re constantly buying materials and patterns. Even if you don’t sew, you’re still buying costumes and accessories. And then there’s wigs and all the products and charges that go into styling it. Let’s face it, if you’re broke, you’re probably not going to have the best costume as compared to a time when you do have more money to spend. Also, skill level. If you’re sewing or styling, you should take into consideration if you’re ready to take on a bigger task. If this is your first time cosplaying, it’s probably better if you start with simpler costumes and work your way up to more elaborate costumes. Not only will it be easier for you and better for your experience, but your costume will look better if you work your way up to it.

Point 4: Do I have enough time? Time is a luxury that most of us take for granted. “Con is 3 months away, I have plenty of time!” Well... You’d be surprised. Before you know it, it’ll be only a month before con and suddenly it’s a week, and you don’t have a costume! Basically, plan ahead and then start sooner than you would. You’ll be much happier if you did. Even if you’re going to be L (Death Note) or Misa Misa [Death Note], don’t think that just throwing on a white shirt and jeans or a random “gothic” outfit will make a costume. There’s hair or wig styling that needs to be done along with actual costume planning [especially for Misa Misa].

Some other factors you may want to take into consideration are:

Point 1: Cosplay groups. If you’re not too sure who to cosplay or if you don’t want to do it alone, there’s always cosplay groups to join. You can make one with your friends or join one that’s being formed on your convetion’s forum/board. This is a great way to start cosplaying since you could get help from members in your group.

Point 2: Looking like a character. Sometimes, you may be lucky enough to look uncannily like a character. This would be a good indicator to try cosplaying as them. Not everyone can look like the character they cosplay, so you could utilize this if you can.

EGL [Elegant Gothic Lolita]

[Disclaimer: I’m not very good at personally judging what is or isn’t lolita standards, so here’s a snipit from the Lolita Handbook from Cosplay.com by Meiki.]

Keep in mind that this fashion is very strict. If you don't feel the need to follow the general guidelines and post pictures on the internet still claiming to get Lolita, you will probably end up somewhere being made fun of.

What to Wear:
-KNEE LENGTH skirts or dresses.
(Ero-lolis exist, but I wouldn't suggest trying it. This is a very hard style to get right. So a little below or above the knee is your best bet.)

-Tights or knee socks, opaque and one color.
(Stripey tights/socks are generally looked down upon unless they are brand. Especially black and white ones. You could also wear socks with a pattern like crowns or flowers on them, but good luck finding them if they aren't brand.)

-BLOUSE or Cutsew
(Wear a blouse. Unless your dress is a one-piece, meaning it has sleeves. Even then, it's a good idea to wear a blouse. Lolitas convey MODESTY. This means no cleavage. Cutsews are basically the lolita equivalent to a tee-shirt, it normally has puffy sleeves, a square neckline, an image on it such as bunnies, crowns, etc. and lace)

-Mary Jane shoes
(Mary janes are fairly easy to find these days. With a heel or without, whatever your preference is. It's argued that you can wear black mary janes with an outfit that doesn't contain black, but I'd avoid it if possible. You can also wear boots, but unless you're wearing punk loli don't wear big buckled boots or anything.)

-Hair acessories
(Alice bows, which are large hair bows, pairs of smaller hairbows, headdresses, and small hats are acceptable. Wearing something on your head is really mandatory, it balances things out.)

-PETTICOAT
(Wearing a petticoat is pretty much mandatory in EGL fashion.)

-Stuff to carry
(Most lolis don't carry much except for their purse, so make sure it matches your outfit well. Stuffed animals are occasionally carried, but not really very often. Parasols are good, but avoid the ones that are entirely lace, they tend to look cheap.)

Dont's:
-Fishnets
-Lacy gloves are looked down upon
-Very strange color combinations, no neon colors
-Cheap lace (a good tutorial about what is and isnt is here: http://community.livejournal.com/egl/4214467.html)
-Armwarmers/Legwarmers. These are okay for things like decora, not loli.
-Too MUCH lace
-A flat skirt, or one that's too short.
-Cheap fabrics, especially satin.
-CAT EARS. Please no cat ears. EGL is not a costume, it is clothing.
-Aprons aren't commonly worn, it gives to much of a maid look.

Makeup:
-No white face or black lipstick.
-You want to look natural, glossy lips, light eyeshadow and a little blush is fine.

Hair:
-Natural hair, or a natural looking wig.
-Typically curled, hime cuts look very nice too.
-Bangs or no bangs, both look fine with loli.
-Crazy hair colors can work alright, but avoid anything really crazy, cyber dreds, really poofy hair, etc.

Music-based Cosplay
[Visual Kei]

Not many, but a good few of the cosplayers you see dress up as singers from J-pop/J-rock bands or other Asian music groups. The flamboyant costumes that these singers wear is also a fashion called Visual Kei.

Much like normal costumes, after researchering a certain group or singer, there will be costumes that strike you as appealing and thus the cosplay journey begins!

[Please feel free to add anything. My knowledge on Visual Kei and musical cosplay is very very limited.]

Fursuits

Fursuits is a more complex type of costuming where one wears a mascot suit [much like the Mickey Mouse and Goofy you see at Disneyland]. Now you may be thinking “How the heck am I supposed to make a suit like that?!” Well, personally I’m still just a newbie at it, so here are several tutorials and videos to help you! [Let me assure you, it’s not AS hard as you’d think!]

I've Got My Character! But Where do I start?

Well congrats! You've taken your first step toward becoming a cosplayer or at least trying out costuming. :3 -Party noise maker sounds- Now then, if this is your first time making a costume then you'd probably be pretty lost on how to even start. So here's a few steps you should take into consideration.

Patterns: Every piece of clothing you make needs a pattern of some sort. May it be a pattern you make yourself or one you buy, it's going to happen. A pattern is basically a paper [normally very thin] that has the guidelines for your piece of clothing. Now, keep in mind that you're making a costume and that most patterns come in normal clothing. This means that there may be times you need to alter patterns in order for them to fit your costumes better. IE: lowering a neck line, adding or taking off sleeves, lengthening or shortening a dress or skirt.
+If you need to find a pattern, they're literally all over the place! Walmart has a few. JoAnns [a fabric store on mainland USA] and any other fabric store is going to have patterns. There are many places online to get patterns as well. Just google patterns or a pattern maker [like Simplicity] and look through their catalogs and order away!
+Patterns are not that expensive. During seasonal changes [like from winter to summer] there will be lots of sales! That means patterns that used to be 10 dollars are not going to be 2 dollars!
+Before buying a pattern, please measure yourself! You cannot buy a pattern until you know your measurements! Write them down somewhere [on a post-it or something] so that you can have it on hand when you go shopping for patterns. Tutorial on how to measure yourself. It's always better to have someone help you measure yourself. There will be a chart on the patterns that you can match up your sizes to their sizes and pick the pattern size you need.
+Pattern sizes =/= Store clothing sizes

Fabric: Now, there's a common question on what kind of fabric you should buy. Well, there isn't really a one-size-fits-all answer to this. Every costume is different and looks different. I can't suggest that you use cotton for a Chinese dress because that'd be silly.
+Generally, I find that thicker cottons are easiest to sew and wear.
+You should look around your local fabric market before shopping online or through a catalog if you've never really experience fabrics before. Just to get the feel and idea of how a fabric is before purchasing it is very helpful.
+If ordering fabric online, there are sometimes swatches that you can ask for/order. These are basically little squares of the fabric you're looking at and the company will ship it to you so you can look at the fabrics first hand before committing.
+Always look at the pattern you bought for how many yards you'll need!
+Buying a little more is always better. Sometimes, the fabric will not be there the next time you go back to the store!
+Look for cupons. They will save you.

How to Sew: There are two ways that most people sews: hand sewing or using sewing machines. There are many tutorials on Youtube on how to use a sewing machine, how to hand sew, and everything in between!
+I don't suggest you buy a sewing machine just for one costume. Maybe use your parents or grandparents or a friend's. They're not cheap, so just try it out before you commit.
+Sewing machines are my choice of sewing. Unless there are details I need to sew, I usually use a sewing machine to connect ends, hem, and what not.
+Clasps and Hooks are very very very useful for times when you don't want to use buttons or you need a quick and easy way to take on and off your costume.
+Zippers are also good! Don't be intimidated by the zippers!
+Take care to research your fabric and the type of thread/needle you're using. Denim [jean material] is very different from satin and you cannot use normal needs and thread on either of them.

Wig Styling: Generally, you will need several basic items to style a wig: hair spray, water, blow drying, scissors [sharp, hair cutting ones as well as hair sheering scissors], wig comb, wig head or something to hold your wig in place [a friend will do].
+Hair styles vary like costumes, so if you need specific help then it'd be best to seek it in your own thread or look through tutorials [some of which I have posted] in order to get a general idea on how to work things.
+If your wig is tangled, the best thing you can do for it is to use your wig comb [and possibly some nut oil] and work your wig until it's smooth again. Sometimes using hot water straightening [see tutorials] will help the tangling.

Storing and Caring: When storing for a costume, you should make sure to keep it in a cool, dark area. A closet would be very good for this. Keeping it in the sun will cause color fading and the heat may damage something [designs you may have painted on or something like that]. Wigs should be kept in their bags and stored somewhere cool and dark. Heat can damage the wig fibers or just make them frizz which isn't pretty. If you have a wig head or something of that sort then storing your wigs on those would be favorable over the bags.
+If you have a heavily styled wig, it's best to leave those on wig heads rather than their bags.
+Longer wigs can be stored in bags. Just make sure to tie them up in a loose pony tail. It's probably best if you use two or three other rubber bands along the pony tail just to keep it tame and in place.
+Depending on the type of fabric you used, how your costume was made, and what you did to your costume [painted designs on it or beaded something] there are several ways you can wash it. Sometimes you can throw it into the washing machine [machine sewn or very very tightly hand sewn and the fabric will take well to the hot/cold water and being thrown around]. Sometimes you can carefully hand wash and air dry it. Sometimes it's best to just air out your costume for a few days and bring it in. Frebreez is god.
+I store my costumes in a box. ._.Which does work, but don't forget to iron them out. Wrinkles in a costume turn out terrible in pictures and give off a bad image.

Well Crap. I can't sew and I don't have a wig. What to do!

Not everyone can sew or style or create like others, so that's why there's commissions and online stores! Commissioners are people who make custom costumes/accessories/wig style just for you. Online stores normally have a chart that you need to pick costumes/accessories/wigs from.

Commissioners:

Please look here for commissioner reviews!
Please look here for commissioners NOT to go to!

Wig Stores:

Cosworx
Amphigory [They don't take Paypal]
Ebay [Sellers to look for: cosplaywig, yankenshop, zhenna0036]
Solgoo

Cosplay Stores:

Milanoo

*Suggestion: Don't trust pictures from places like ebay. They are (most likely) stolen so your product will not look like that of the picture or possibly might not come at all.

FAQ

Q. I can't use hair straighteners and curlers on my wig, right?
A. WRONG. You can, in fact, use straighteners and curlers on wigs. If the fibers of the wig are of GOOD quality and the curler isn't on searing hot, it is very possible for you to curl and straighten your wigs with ease. Just don't leave it in one spot too long and test the heat on a small bit of your wig before going full out. Witness 1

Q. I don't want to chance hurting my wig! How else can I curl or straighten my wig?
A. Using hot water and hair driers is the best way to do both of these. Witness

Q. Can I lighten a wig?
A. No. :[ Sorry, but it's pretty much impossible.

Q. Do I need to have _______?
A. Well, you don't NEED to have anything. It's cosplay, it's for fun. But to make your cosplay more appealing, then you'd probably need ______. Contacts are good if your character has striking eyes. Wigs are good to change your hair color without dyes and spray in colors. You don't NEED these things, but they're always better to have.
