alright so the overall consensus (and i don't think i've seen anyone say anything to the contrary) is it's a-ok, so i'll go ahead with it!!! i guess um since i am still kind of hesitant about it, which chara i should go as? haha /shot sorry so indecisive here

characters i'm debating:
crossplay
fumi manjoume
yasuko sugimoto
yui funami
chitose or chizuru ikeda

regular (??? all i know is this one is...like i cosplay my own gender so this one's all guys)
ishida uryuu
one of the host club members (ohshc), most likely kyouya
shinpachi

and for...reference?
my face

'Cause I don't think that they'd understand

Bring a friend if you'd like, but there's not going to be nearly as much hostility at a convention than in other social situations. People there are used to seeing things that aren't quite "society's norm" and it doesn't phase them much.

Just be prepared for squealing fangirls (because man, we do loves us some crossdressing men), and people that realize you're of the XY-persuasion shouting that "it's a trap."

Female to male crossplay IS a lot more common than male to female, but they're both generally accepted. After all, cosplay is about having fun, and expressing your enjoyment of a character/series.

"Not even time to finish my cake?"

I'd say that the only thing you'd have to worry about is if you do a really convincing crossplay - and even then, the worst you'd have to worry about is a few double-takes when you start talking because people legitimately thought you were a girl. ((Girls crossplaying as guys get the exact same thing, though.))

Really, there's always a guy or twenty crossplaying at pretty much any given convention, and nobody so much as bats an eye at it. I remember at Connecticon 2010, there was a guy crossplaying as Lulu from Final Fantasy (I think his name was Dave or something? I don't really remember...), and he looked better in that dress than I would have.

NO. THERE IS NO MORE TIME, EVEN FOR CAKE. FOR YOU, THE CAKE IS OVER. YOU HAVE REACHED THE END OF CAKE.

ahh!! really? that's a relief!! i guess cause...it's an anime con haha /slapped

i hear horror stories about cons sometimes (not necessarily to do with crossplaying) and stuff like guys creeping on girls with cameras, taking pics w/o permission, etc, is this something i'll have to worry about? ;m; since none of my costumes are too revealing and...i don't think anyone will be taking pics of my chest hahahahaha

i think i could deal with squealing and shouting "it's a trap" but glomping/over-excessive touching/ogling/etc would really freak me out haha

thank you! *V*
Freak Parade

the sad thing is my voice is, for a guy my age, kind of...uh.....feminine......though no one ever really mistakes me for a girl, i guess i'm also worried of yeah, being too convincing;; huhu the turmoil!

but WOWZERS that's...well brilliant, it'll be a lot less scary if i'm not the only one doing it!!
Sekhmet-chan

oh sweet god in heaven no
all of these characters, with the exception of ichida, wear school uniforms primarily that are pretty uh...well, they do cover you, so...
i don't think i could ever do anything like man-faye, that's really really bold haha and more, i'd guess, for kicks than...as a "serious" cosplay...

There's nothing wrong with it, cosplay is about having fun. Besides I see guys crossplaying all the time at every con I go to, but they're all in California so that might have something to do with it lol.

are the cons fun? just in your opinion? are they worth going to? the prices for hotels etc seems kinda steep so i still am on the fence about this...
thank you though! *V* i think i am a lot more confident in crossplaying now, aha. it's a relief it's not...well, weird/wrong or anything...
i've heard lots of negative remarks about mtf crossplayers umua i was worried ;;

DJFADJ I'LL FLY UP TO MEET YOU. I'll be your con friend. xD

...you know, actually, that weekend should be the weekend after I graduate from university. I could totally ******** wing this as a celebratory ******** trip, since I've also wanted to go to Chicago. BRO ARE YOU IN?

To answer the question(s) more seriously, absolutely you should cosplay at your first con. And every single con after that. In my experience, I was looked at waaaay more strangely when I was not in costume than when I was. People were weirded out/disappointed to just see me, not someone dressed up. Of course, you know I support crossplaying SO DO IT YEAH. There are some horror stories about people invading private space but you should be fine. Keep your wits about you and don't agree to go down empty hallways with people --- and do NOT let them follow you up to your hotel room. Simple rules, really.

Bringing a friend would be nice. There are a lot of long lines and events going on at cons, so it's good to have a second pair of eyes checking out cool things (and costumes!), someone to hold your stuff while you take pictures, and someone to geek out with.

LIKE ME.

Hurhur,
Sweetie, don't worry about it.
I crossplay plenty, (seeing as I hate dresses and skirts...),
And nothing's really gone wrong, is anything at all.
I suppose the only thing you'd really have to worry about is surprised looks from people that didn't realize you were (are) male.

But all in all, don't sweat it.
Cosplay what you like, and be happy.
And have fun.

YEAH I AM FO REAL
I don't know how many times I've been foiled while trying to meet online friends. It's irritating. SO LET'S MAKE THIS HAPPEN GANBATTE~~~ My only actual concern is that I've been out of the anime scene for a couple years, which is why I haven't gone to a con in awhile, but ehhh. This'll compensate for that. I'm trying to get Yoko to come along with me, since we're both graduating and we'd been talking about going to another con together some time soon. We have no idea what to cosplay as, though.

Well, so what if you are too convincing? What's the worst that could happen? You'd just explain to them that you are male, and they either go 'holy s**t haha you got me' or 'damnit another one >_>' and wander off. xD I don't foresee bad consequences, really. When I dress up as Harry Potter at school, some people don't recognize me at all. I enjoy that. xP

ANYTHING CAN HAPPEN AT CON lol

And yes, cons are always more fun with people you know.

Do what you like. I personally don't really care the sex of the person dressing as a character who I may or may not recognize in the halls of a con, and I think plenty of others feel the same. =)

FTM crossplay is way common. MTF less so, but I've seen it done well, I've seen it done poorly, and I've seen it done as a joke (ie: Sailor Manry).

I would never give anyone flack simply for MTF crossplay. I would never say NOT to do it if it's something that you want to do (it's harmless fun, after all), but I would advise to make it damn convincing, as others may not see it the same way I do. I personally have never seen hate for live cosplay (beyond "that's on the wrong side" or "your such-and-such is inaccurate" etc), but I live in an area where people are either accepting and friendly or they avoid you. I don't know if this applies to everywhere.

Best of luck!
