Is Japanese cosplay REALLY that good?

Yea....Japan usually does do pretty well. They've had more time to study anime since it came from there first. Americans can do amazing too. Its just Japanese that get more attention i guess...they look wierd tho when they try to cosplay characters that have different skin tone or hair and don't do it right.

Well, in terms of photo shopping.. it's not a contest at all and is not even worth speaking about because it's irrelevant.

The japanese do tend to have better cosplay and I contribute that to 2 factors..
1. They have waay more resources for the costumes (I mean, c'mon, it's JAPAN)
2. Just the way japanese look in general. If you look at japanese ppl, you'll see they really LOOK like anime characters.. well, not literally but more so than other races.. The bone structure, eyes, hair.. I mean the whole anime character look was based off of there people so.. it's only natural they look a bit more like them.

Uhm, alright , so I know you guys clearly know that not all of the best cosplayers' pics went through photoshop. I think I saw a girl saying that Kipi and Alodia are fake, but in truth, they aren't.This is Alodia's deviantArt account. You can check her journal entries, where she posts pictures of herself right off the bat, in events and such. And she isn't even Japanese, she's Filipino, and currently residing there, and attending conventions there. If she happens to be in another country cosplaying or something, mostly it's because she was invited to join competitions and such. Please do not make assumptions. It's there written on her journal entries, written by herself.

And here is a video of Kipi. In truth, I doubt that they need major overtime photoshop work to appear how they are in public, so please don't even think of the possibilities that these two amazing cosplayers are fakes.

Other than that, yes, not all Japanese cosplayers are great, but not all American cosplayers are as well. Although, there are, in fact awesome Japanese cosplayers in Japan, and awesome American cosplayers all over as well. It's a tie, and people shouldn't pick on what race cosplays the best, and shouldn't point out what is clearly evident anymore. (:

Haha, seeing that made me feel a lot better. I see a lot of xenophobia when it comes to cosplay, which makes me feel really ugly. But I think that looking like the character isn't as critical in America as it is in Nippon. In America, we think, "Cosplay! Fun!" But it seems like in Nippon, it's more like, "Cosplay! Can't look ugly!" It's like they're not doing it for fun, but for rank and fame. Which takes all of the fun out of it. And as an American, I shall say with pride: I'm an American, and I WILL COSPLAY WHATEVER THE ******** I WANT!

I totally have to agree with you. And it drives me crazy! I constantly wish I looked like a Japanese girl, because they're so beautiful and have perfect cute little bodies, but then again, they don't have some of the necessary...fat areas that Americans have.
I was dealing with "PrudtobeCuteAsian" on Youtube (which is no easy task, that girl's a biznitch) and I was like, "Alright, I will stop cosplaying as soon as you can find me a young asian girl with huge eyes, huge tits, a skinny waist, great hips, and long legs." She immediately was quiet. biggrin

I don't think it's got anything to do with ethnicity. Just what is right for the particular cosplayer.
