Welcome to Gaia! ::

((srry if posted in the wrong place, i DID try to find a subfourm directed to conventions))

Hello, i have a question i would like to ask EVERY con-goer on here but first, a little Info!!

A Goldfish scoop booth / Kingyo-sukui stall, you see them all over the place in hundreds, maybe thousands of Anime's and Manga's.

((BEFORE POSTING ABOUT DIEING GOLDFISH, READ ON BELOW!!!!))

((Example:
*Azumanga Daioh
*Elfen Lied
*Mai-HiME
*Ranma 1/2 - when Ranma succeeds in catching all of the fish after discovering it doubles as speed training, the enraged owner made him scoop piranhas with his hands if he wanted to keep them all. He succeeds.
*Maison Ikkoku (manga only)
*Love Hina
*Tenshi Na Konamaiki
*Lucky Star - Kagami overfeeds the goldfish, and it grows to an unusual size.
*Kashimashi: Girl Meets Girl
*Sailor Moon Played for for laughs when Minako (who is helping at the stall) deliberately weakens the nets after being mistaken for older than she actually is by the children who visit the stall.
*Mahoraba
*Hand Maid May
*Generator Gawl: Gawl and the magician-generator compete by catching an insane number of goldfish before continuing on with their battle.
*Great Teacher Onizuka: And when Noboru expresses sympathy for the goldfish (as they obviously don't live very long compared to pet store fish), this wins major points in the eyes of his Tsun Dere Love Interest Anko.
*Konjiki No Gash Bell
*Dennou Coil
*Haruhi Suzumiya: Especially shown because it was "a rare request from Mikuru", in Haruhi's own words.
*Haruhi Suzumiya
*Haruhi Suzumiya
*Haruhi Suzumiya ... you get the idea. There's a reason that particular arc is called "ENDLESS Eight".
*Nyoron Churuya San
*Tenchi Muyo!. They actually had two booths, though the creatures in Ryoko's booth were most definitely not goldfish.

JUST to name a few..... )))

It is a fun family game usually held in Japanese summer or shrine festivals. After paying typically 100 yen you are given a single paper scoop to try and grab as many goldfish OR rubber balls in some cases, then place them in a bowl before your scoop breaks away.

You can then either keep the fish / bouncy balls scooped or trade them for different better prizes depending on how many fish / balls you scooped out.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Now to the point, I own and run a Kingyo-sukui or Goldfish scoop booth for small fairs and party events. I would LOVE to take my booth to a Con!! The Problem is... I'm not sure how i should go about this. Ask to hold a Booth at a Con, or maybe hold a Kingyo-sukui Tournament instead.
So the question here is...
Would you like to see and play a Kingyo-sukui Booth at a Con for prizes.
OR
Would you like to see and enter a Kingyo-sukui Tournament to try your hand at getting first place and winning prize money.
~~~~PLEASE NOTE!!!! Both will require money to play / enter... a poll on another date will decide a fare entrance / play Fee!! Both will also have either prizes or rewards. NO LIVE FISH WILL BE USED, Bouncy Balls will be used in there place~~~~

Please Vote on the poll below, which would you rather see at a Con that you might go to!!

I think this is a great idea, but that you might run into some trouble if you actually tried to use live goldfish. cat_sweatdrop The rubber balls is an interesting take on it though! I think this would be a great theme booth to have at a con though, and I've certainly never seen anything like it at any of the ones I've been to so far. cat_3nodding

balls work great as a substitute, they dont move around but there mass and shape makes up for it.

I have always wanted to check out a Festival theme con!! I even came up with a very nice concept for one... LoL but i would never get the funding to do it.

"First Shrine" ©

2 day event, Friday and Saturday after new years day. it would be festival themed with tons and tons of classic Japanese style games along with American. Famous International foods from both nations and even a MASSIVE Vendor section (( Honestly... the place i would like to do this would have a dealers room almost as big as COMIC CON!!!!!! ))

there would be a Temporary shrine build so people could make there first prayers of the year.

Man, id have to hunt down some SERIOUS investors ^_^ to pull it off

or win the lotto!! XD

Please please don't use live goldfish. Or if you do, don't give them out to people. I really hate to say it but most of them would end up dying if you gave them out. At cons, people won't worry about taking care of fish.
What's this got to do with Cosplay?

I agree with everyone else not to use real Goldfish / Koi. The idea of bouncy balls as a subsitute is much better. That being said, it is a summer game where people are wearing Yukata and enjoying summer events like Tanabata or O-Bon.

I do think that you might want to have this event at a summer convention - depending on where you live. The big summer one in Maryland is Otakon, so if you lived in Maryland and you wanted to do this, a summer convention would be great.

I'd think it would also be nice if you wore a Yukata to the event. That way, even if the con goers aren't dressed traditionally, you will still get the atmosphere of the event.

Depending on what con you're going to, go to the webpage and check to see about their panel/events process. I know when I did my panel, I had to wait several months before it was a go. I eventually got my answer, but you will have to wait for the con's decision and plan the event as if it were a go.

Another thing is that if you want things like paper lanterns to light up for game, try to find places that sell them in bulk. It may be boring with just one color of paper lanterns, but put them in the right spot/level/etc. you have a great atmosphere to have your panel/event.

If you want to talk about it more, PM me. I'll be more than happy to help...

I can picture a bunch of bags of goldfish slowly dying in various hotel rooms as they're left forgotten, or being declined at airports.

The balls and such seem cool.
lol again, no real fish will be used!! Might toss in a few fake Gel fish for extra points but that's all.

I only use real fish for small parties and cote the scoops with a waterless spray on oil, similar to that on the goldfish. They may get a little stressed but not enough to cause harm. The coating i put on the scoops helps protect the fish from scraping against the paper but does not tamper the scoops strength. Plus the little guys get a home when the kids play (( I print out papers with everything a novice fish owners should know about how to care for this particular fish. I even offer to sell them a bowl or mini tank. ))

back to topic. I got a "preview" ligned up at a con (( they do not want me disclosing which con it it will be set up at... but if it goes well, i might be allowed to set up a 3-day stall there next year!!

Yea, my booth has some paper lanterns in the back to help with decor. If i manage to get my booth to a con officially. I'll be sure to deck it out with lots of lanterns, Koi and Goldfish!!

I'm gonna wear my Yukata and my guy friend ( Boy friend, if he gets some guts and asks me... LoL heart ) will have a men's and tie a woven paper headband on his forehead. LoL blaugh rofl
about the New Con idea I talked about earlier. tell me what you think of this

Hey, some friends and i were talking and we stumbled onto an idea... ~~Maybe!!!~~

We were talking about my Kingyo-sukui stall and it somehow turned into an idea to look into creating a new con called First Shrine. I'm sure almost everyone who reads this knows what the term "First Shrine" means but ill explain for those who don't.

Hatsumode or First Shrine is a term used to refer "The first shrine visit of the new year" A custom primarily used in Japan, People flock to there nearest or favorite Shrine or Buddhist temple the first 3 days of the year.

In almost every legendary anime and manga, this custom is either done or mentioned at some point. This kind of scene is in so many anime and Mangas, i couldn't even begin to count!!! This is why my friends an i feel this MIGHT be a good idea and an interesting project to look into.

Basically, the concept for the con would be to come to the Con and make a Prayer or Wish to a Small shrine for the new year. You can even purchase a small wood plate with your wish to hang on a wall. Then walk around and play some traditional Japanese festival games (along with some American) or try some International (Traditional Holiday) Japanese Cuisine (Will also be a mixture of other culture foods so everyone is happy) Carnival rides MAY also be in place, it probably wont but can happen if a high number of people want there to be some. Tents will be set up for panels, performances, Meet-n-Greets, autograph signing, Etc... Lastly, what con wouldn't have a Dealers Room?? A Dealers room would be set up as well in either a tent or in a nearby building.

The proposed dates for this would be the First weekend (F,S,S) After new years day, if the first Friday is on or within 2 days after new years day, it ill be held the following weekend.

Well, again... this is JUST a shot in the dark so to speak.

Let me know what you think, if you have any Questions, Comments, Concerns or maybe even would be interested in funding an event such as this. ((With games, food and dealers room, profits should be pretty fare))

Here is a little poll so you can voice your thoughts without leaving a comment if that's what you want

Vote Here Now

~~Thank You~~

Alright, I read through your idea and I do have some advice. If you want to make a cultural anime convention - I mean, traditional summer games, a mock shrine - maybe even a portable shrine, Yukata, Kimonos made of silk, wool, etc. that's fine. I love traditional Japanese culture - more so than anime, but you will have some hurdles to go over.

This sub-forum has a great deal of helpful advice on starting a convention. Click around the other forums, join, and ask questions. This should give you a better understanding of how conventions and staff work to create a convention. It's full of good advice, so if you join, you can always ask questions to the more experienced members.

My second concern is where are you going to hold your convention? Stupid as it sounds, a traditional culture sounds like a great idea, but where are going to set it up? How are you going to get the money to hold it? What dates are your convention? Do you want traditional dress at least one day? Stuff like that. Again, I don't drive, and I live in Maryland. If you're going to hold a traditional convention, how are people going to get there?

There are also other issues. If your convention is more than one day, what hotels or hostels are atendees going to stay at? What about food? Etc.

Also, not just the dates of your convention, but how are you going to recruit staff to work? The URL in the above paragraphs also has a place to recruit staff, but how will they be paid? Free badge? Free food? Etc.

Next to last thing. If you make a mock Buddhist Temple or Shinto Shrine, be careful of the religious imagery you use. For someone who does do basic research, I can understand what the use of the Manji is. However, some congoers may not. The minute they see that Manji, they're going to cry Nazi - it isn't your fault, blame Hitler for this. So be careful about your imagery.

Finally, will this con/shrine/temple be open only on Japanese festivals? Or will it be more of like a 3-day convention. Here's what I mean. If a 20-Year-Old Otaku comes to your shrine on the second Monday of January, that means they're there for Seijin no Hi. That means traditional men's outfits or Furisodes. What would the celebrations be like? Will there be a lecture for adult Otaku on how to act and work within the government of the USA? Will there be speaches on duties such as voting for elected officals during election years - note, all forms of govermental obligations - presidential voting, House/Senate voting, local county voting, etc. What about stressing the desire to wait until 21 years old, encouraging young men and women to wait until they can legally drink, etc.

I think a traditional culture/anime convention would be a great idea. However, depending on where it is located, I might or might not be able to come. I do, however, support the idea. It's just you'll need to find funding and work out other issues. Again, I support this idea, but getting funding and all the other details taken care of first should be a priority.
