would it just be better for me to connect by usb cable?

here is the situation on my computer

i have NO Ethernet port on my computer HOWEVER the cable company gave me a USB to Ethernet adapter to plug into the only high speed USB port i had
according to the adapter it runs >>40X FASTER<< than without this adapter
however most websites are slow and gaia's is the worst at slow , probably because of this adapter.

i have had friends tell me it would be better to hook directly from the cable modem's usb port to my computer's only high speed USB port
i do have the modem's disc just in case i need it.

my first question is this
WHICH IS FASTER? the current Ethernet adapter? or a direct USB port with a proper USB cable?

my second question is this
the USB to Ethernet adapter came with a 3 ft cable to hook from the USB port to the adapter
but i just put the adapter in directly, is there any advantage to hooking up that cable now? or just leave it the way it is? everything seems to be fine
HOWEVER....if that cable will increase speed at all i will hook it up.

I doubt it would make a difference since it's the same ISP connection but you can compare it yourself. Use it with the usb/ethernet adapter and go to my http://www.speedtest.net/
then use the modem to usb, go to the speedtest site and see if it's faster.
