I use MSN 8.5 and I do not want to upgrade. It tells me I have to upgrade before it will sign in again. I can bypass this through a compatibility change, but then it won't work with messenger Plus!

I've been told I can disable this update completely, by downloading a "disableupdate.reg" file and then running it.

Question is, how do I run it and tweak the registry to use it?

.reg files can have a very harmful effect on your computer's registry if you do not know what the file is modifying.

To answer your question however, just double click the .reg file, similarly to a .exe file. It would prompt you saying you need administrative rights to make changes to the registry or it will prompt you if you are sure you wish to make the changes or not.

I wouldn't recommend you actually go into the registry and edit it unless you do some serious research on the subject. You can get into the registry with regedit.exe using the run dialog. Navigating and finding exactly what you want requires some know-how.

Yeah I want to know how I can replace the existing msn reg file with this disableupdate reg file, because I clicked it and it added it to the registry but hasn't changed anything.

Should I restart and then it will change?

I restarted and it didn't work.
