just clean installed vista and 7 as a dual boot last weekend
they both run at the same speed

but as Rydian said, if you have xp, i would recommend getting 7, if you have vista, there's no need to upgrade, its all preference in that one

Windows 7 worth it?? I'm a computer geek(but athletic) and I need to know if I should get it!

There used to be a free beta demo but now it is over. You should get Windows 7 because it is really fast.(I too am a cpu geek)

I triple boot Windows XP, Windows 7, and Ubuntu 9.04. Windows 7 is really fast, and it is better than vista. It runs at about 512MB of 2048MB of memory I have. mrgreen

Vista uses around 512MB of RAM. The only thing techies complain about is Vista holding another 512MB of RAM for running applications.

P.S. Nice job with your sig. :p

I think windows 7 doesnt really have a difference in it then Vista in more company ways
In personal ways i think it has nice features like being able to have your wallpapers change autimatically

So all together i think you cant go wrong with either and love them both i just uninstalled 7 ultimate because i hate the taskbar

Personally, I dual-boot Windows XP and Kubuntu 9.10. There is nothing Windows 7 can do that I can't with this setup. So to answer your question, I don't think so.

dual booting is completly useless i dual booted windows XP and windows Vista ultimate and its a pain so now im just Vista ultimate

It's hardly useless if you actually have a use for it. There are tons of programs out there that work on one, but not the other. I've got a handful of older games that still work on XP, but Vista...forget it.

I'd rather have a system that dual-booted a version of Windows and the MacOS. I'm in a design program that uses both of them heavily.

As far as Windows 7 is concerned, I'm curious, but I don't want it right now. I need a new laptop soon, and unfortunately they all have W7. I had a great converstation with a guy at Best Buy about it because he still really liked XP too and it sucks that you can't buy a new laptop with it on. I don't wanna put it on myself... xp

XP is a dead and decrepit OS. its a decade old. Get over XP and move on. Not to mention i highly doubt your future laptop will have all the drivers you need and be compatible with XP.

Sorry to be so blunt but ALOT of people still think this.

windows 7 was made to be able to run xp software (there is a XP mode or something)
the only reason i have to even use windows is flash performance

Microsoft also let Windows2000, WindowsME, Windows 98 all die. Why don't you complain about those?
Windows is trying to move on like its done so many times in the past. XP is no longer updated, other than important security updates which are few and far between. XP came out almost a decade ago, and a new OS was long past due. Your not clever by calling it "M$", please stop trying to act like XP is an amazing OS when its not. Please just let it die like it should.

You aren't being blunt, you're being just plain rude. I never said it was it was the best OS ever or anything, but at least it 'effing worked most of the time. Vista was just crap, and I'm not very much inclined to try 7 either. Given their previous attempt, I just don't trust it yet. Just because it's new, doesn't mean it's BETTER. Get off your high horse.

If XP was so dead, why are game companies and other software companies still making their software XP compatable? And I can bet anything all the drivers on the laptop I want are also XP compatable. A good majority of PC users still have XP. I've only seen a couple of games that were only for Vista, and I can guarantee they didn't sell well.

Absol- Even XP had a backwards compatibility mode. Didn't always help though. Sometimes it made my really old games run, sometimes it didn't.

'Cause a large amount of people still have XP. Also, the work it takes to make something work on XP is... very little. Hell, it just amounts to "don't use anything that's new in vista", and for a 3D game that's easy considering the only choices like that are huge ones, such as making your engine use directx10 or something.

But that's what I mean, it's not dead at all. Plenty of people still really like XP, and compared to most Microsoft products, it works fairly well. Why spend more money to change something you already like?

Interestingly enough, it seems as if a lot of the problems the Micro. OS's have been having, occured after Bill Gates stepped down from his top position at Microsoft. Hmm...

Please tell me WHY specific reasons Vista is crap?
SPACE ANY of the regulars here will tell you its not. I have used vista since day 1 and I've never had any issues with it. Especially now that its on SP2 there are even less issues with it. And I wasn't trying to be rude. I was trying to be blunt because unless your that blunt half the time people don't get it. The outstanding reviews of windows7 from from so many different sources is not a reason to believe that its better?

SPACE I'm not trying to tell people to upgrade from XP to win7 most of the time I just tell people to wait till they get a new machine. Generally speaking if they do have an XP machine its old and with in a year or so plan on getting a new computer anyways. But you should NEVER even think about downgrading to XP unless you have some very specific reasons like company software, etc.

I've had issues with it. I've had trouble getting applications and games to run. I don't like the fact that it feels the need to warn you about everything, it's obnoxious. I don't care if you can turn that off, it's a design flaw to begin with. I never really liked the way they changed the menus, it felt cluttered. Even if I got Vista the first thing I'd be doing is looking for the Classic view option like XP had. In fact, I just didn't like the way they changed the interface at all.

Point is, don't try and make someone feel like an idiot about voicing their opinion about the system. Because it's just that, an opinion. I'm not saying everyone has to believe it's crap, but that's what I think of it. I spent a lot of time trying to make things work for my friends that got computers with it. Then again, I'm dealing with a few hardcore Mac users for friends as well who wouldn't touch a Microsoft product with a 10-ft pole. I'm not a fan of Macs either, and in fact I hate them, but again, it's just from my point of view.

In the end I know I'm going to have to deal with it, because yes, XP is old. They aren't going to keep it around much longer. Is there some reason I can't keep enjoying using something that I think works better?

Rydian was being sarcastic. His point was that XP has limited abilities compared to Vista or Windows7 that allow them to do more than XP like being able to run directx 10.

@Rydian ... I think I'm going to make you a sarcastic sign that you can wave when your posting mrgreen

I didn't say you couldn't enjoy it. When did you try to do all this with vista? and how long did you use it before thinking it was cluttered? I admit that when I first got it, it took some getting used to but not too long. I also understand you don't care fore the graphic upgrade and I don't know if you know this but there is no classic mode in Win7. I hope that doesn't make you not want to try it more. ALOT of people hate Vista with out even trying it. They talk about the same false arguments everyone else who says that. You say you've used it and didn't like it. And there is your opinion. Unlike most people who just quote someone elses opinion. The warning that you don't like isn't imo isnt a flaw. Most people randomly go on line and start downloading and installing alot of programs and just keep clicking "yes, yes I accepts, yes" when they installing things. And that warning is to prevent those people from installing something they don't want. While you may not need it and find it annoying, it has helped alot of other people that aren't as knowledgeable about computers as you.
