Hey, everyone
i want to get started learning c++. i dont have any former programming knowledge except with html. i was wondering what a good way to learn to program in c++ is. any list of books or direct links to webpages would help, also if you could tell me how YOU learned the lamguage, that would be very much appreciated.

I wouldn't start out with C++ as a first language, especially after HTML.

Pick up Logo, LISP, or a version of Scheme and program with that for awhile. Read a couple of books on logic, and programming basics as well.

I agree... try to learn other programming language first...
I am taking C class and it can get confusing at time
I think a little bit of knowledge in MASM and UNIX would help

I suggest PASCAL, however, if you really really want to be an idiot like me, go here for a free compiler, and here or here for tutorials...I suggest the first one as a main tutorial, and the second one for everything else, because it's a little less simplified.

I picked up on C++ with nothing but HTML. Although,I gave it up a few months ago because I never programmed in it. Lately all Ive been doing is learning php,and refreshing my python.

Its just important to keep in mind that HTML is nothing like C++, it's way simpler and most of it you can see on the screen. In C++ you have to program the mechanics and all that jazz.

try a free book "thinking in c++" of bruce eckel
http://64.78.49.204/

learns things from basics, still remaining complete

it's my favorite one

i think it's nothing wrong with starting with c++, but
have a look at asm, too

It is possible to learn C++ as your first programming language - i did it. though it's a hell of a lot of work - it's hard sweatdrop
If your serious in learning C++, sign up for a course.

I would recommend learning Visual Basic first, and then move to Java. Java will get you fimiluar with many of the basic concepts of C++

Take a class. ^_^() j/k

nah really, that's the best way to learn because then there's a lot of people you can ask for help if you don't understand something. Thankfully progrmaming languages are a lot alike.

I'd start Visual Basic, then C++, Java's more of a combination fo the two, and HTML/javascript is mor eof it';s own language but it has many of the same properties.

Start with C, then migrate to C++. C is the father of C++, and C++ is only more straitforeward, and UNIX knowledge isn't needed, but it will help. However, do not expect to be able to program graphics off the bat, use VB or some other form of BASIC to do that.

ok,
i think ill start with java, then move to C, then move to C++

any recommended reading?

Just learn C++. All 3 are virtually identical. Its probally not going to make it any easyier if you learn Java or C first. C is almost exactly like C++ but without OOP and java is just a completely OOP version. www.cprogramming.com has some good tutorials,C++ for Dummies isint a bad book either.

Please, C++ was after C. sweatdrop So C isn't like C++, C++ is like C.
